Damon is silent for a moment. “I’ve not told them anything since I witnessed my godfather dying.”

“What? Really?”

“Yes.”

“Why not?” I ask.

“It’s just not...meto open up like that.”

“But you heard August just then,” I reply sincerely. “They wouldloveto hear you talk. I’m sure telling them about your godfather and your years in New York would help them. Hell, at the very least I’m sure it would helpyou.”

Again, Damon falls silent. I can tell he’s pondering my words.

“You really think I should open up to them?” he asks me softly.

“I think you should do what you want to do,” I reply. “I think you should do whatever helps you. But me? I personally think opening up will help you heal some wounds that you have buried deep.”

And, for the third time, Damon goes quiet.

“Maybe I shall. Thanks to you, Ava.”

I watch as my fiancé raises his voice to get his family’s attention.

“Everyone.”

And they all turn to him.

“I’ve got something to say,” he announces to the room. “Something that I’ve kept hidden from you all for far too long...”

He’s really doing it, isn’t he?

Because of me.

He’s going to tell them everything.

I watch as my fiancé begins to talk about what really has happened to him all these years. I watch his family listen to him for the first proper time, really understanding his story. He talks about Joshua Hall, and the shootings, and the hard years spent in New York City, and Eugene Abbott, and the knife wound that nearly killed him.

Andme.

He talks about me in such a loving and caring way.

He tells them about how I have healed him. How I havegiven him a second life. How I have pulled him out of the darkest hole and into the light.

How I am to be his wife forever.

I watch on proudly as my fiancé finally opens up to his family about everything that has happened to him since that day he saw his godfather murdered.

And I realize how truly in love I am with this man.
