“What?”

“Stay here,” I repeat.

“I can’t,” she replies.

“Why not, Ava?”

“Because... ofcollege.”

She’s in a flurry, grasping at straws to conjure any excuse that might let her slip away from this one. She better realize the terms of the contract she signed with me. She’s smart enough to comprehend how binding our agreement is.

She’s meant to be here. With me.

“I can make the arrangements with Crystal River University,” I say. “I can get them to place you on a two-month vacation. A leave of absence. That’ll bat away any unwelcome questions.”

Ava scoffs. “You can’t do that.”

“Why not?” I ask.

“The college wouldn’t accept it.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yep,” the girl replies. “They wouldn’t let that slip.”

I smirk. “I can do a lot of things that you might think are impossible, Ava.”

“Oh,impossible? I think you’ve been listening to too much of your own hype, Damon Penmayne.”

“You think I need someone to bring me back to earth?” I observe wryly. “Is that what you think, Ava?”

She crosses her arms defiantly. “Yep, you most certainly need someone to humble you.”

“And you’re the girl who will do that?” I ask her.

Ava shrugs. “Someone has to.”

“I don’t think so.”

“You’re so damn sure of yourself, Damon.”

“Well, how about I show you how I can do the impossible,” I reply. “In fact, I’m going to do something rather impossible to you right now.”

“What is it?” Ava asks, her lip trembling in nervousness.

Closing the distance between us, I move forward toward her with a purpose. Ava’s big apprehensive eyes, a captivating blend of anticipation and uncertainty, lock onto mine as I approach.

She’s holding her breath.

It’s the same look she gave me when she signed the contract and sat on my lap. The same look that made me go absolutely crazy for her.

I lean down so that my lips lightly brush her ear. She’s frozen.

And then I whisper to her.

“Turn around, Beauty, and let me take control.”
