Next to me, Damon growls. “That’s enough of your flirty talk, August. Keep your hands off her. Let’s go inside.”

As the server greets us at the door and guides us into the empty restaurant, I turn to the doctor.

“You’re very different from Damon, even though you two look alike.”

“I’m the better-looking brother,” August replies, making me laugh. “It’s a shame he got the bad looks and the grumpy personality, while I got the brains and the attractive looks.”

I can sense Damon listening in to our two-way conversation even as he organizes things with the server. I like making him a little jealous and a little curious.

We’re taken to a table set up next to the kitchen at the back of the restaurant. Damon wasn’t lying when he said he had booked out the entire place just for us. The Penmaynes really do value their privacy.

“Do you agree with Ava?” August asks Damon when we sit down. “Do you think we are very different?”

“I am nothing like you,” my captor replies to his brother.

It’s a joke. It takes me a moment to realize that they both share a very dry sense of humor. The two men laugh.

I’ve never seen Damon like this.Relaxed.

The two brothers are clearly comfortable with each other. Their blood runs thick.

“Oh, I think we are pretty similar,” August continues.

“You and Spencer were always the smart ones, according to Mother,” Damon replies. “The ones with all the promise. I was the one they kept away in case I dared infect your intelligence.”

“Don’t put yourself down, Damon. You are a hell of a lot smarter than Mother gave you credit for,” the doctor remarks.

“It’s all in the past,” Damon replies.

“To be honest,” August says, “I was pretty damn surprised when you told me you had a girl, Damon. I really, really wanted to meet her when you told me about her.”

“And what would be so surprising about that?” Damon asks.

“Well, you’re not usually the type to...hang aroundwhen it comes to women in your life,” August replies. “Every conquest of yours seems to fall by the wayside pretty damn quickly.”

Damon looks at me, and I can't help but let out a chuckle.

“I understand,” I say. “Damon and I have both come to an...arrangement.”

Now that’s spiked the doctor’s curiosity. “Oh, really?”

“Yes,” Damon grunts. “An arrangement. What she said.”

August’s curiosity is not extinguished. “What kind of...arrangementhave you two got going on, then? Anything that I should be privy to? You always loved a good little secret, Damon.”

I glance back at Damon. He’s staring at August with killer eyes.

“An arrangement you need to know absolutely nothing about,” he growls at his brother.

It’s clear he wants him to immediately cease this line of questioning.

“Alright, keep your little secrets,” the doctor replies with a smirk. “You two are having fun. I see that and I admire that. I must say, though, you sure have picked a very pretty girl to make a so-calledarrangementwith, Damon.”

There’s another growl from my man. “Don’t you start deploying your charming talk again, August. See where that leads you.”

I stifle a giggle at Damon’s seriousness. He’s so very protective of me. I like it.

“Please, no fighting,” I joke.
