When Lola opened the door, then as soon as she closed the door behind her, Lola said, “I think we had someone watching us last night but I haven’t been able to check.”

“Well, let’s take a look then.” Midge went to the cameras and rewound the feed from last night. They could both see a show moving along the fence and it hopped to look around. She shook her head and said, “I checked mine this morning and didn’t find anyone there but there was someone watching your house last night for sure.”

“What do we do?”

“You gotta gardening shed, right?”

Lola nodded but she looked confused. “Yeah, but you didn’t come here to work in my garden.”

Midge stood and smiled at her. “Why of course, I did. But I gotta tell ya, you probably have gophers. This here is gopher country.”

Lola kept shaking her head. “Ok...The key to the shed is in the kitchen.”

“Is Cletas here?” Midge asked.

“No, she’s over at the compound with Jack’s wife, Kalinda. Little Rose loves Cletas.”

“Ok, good,” Midge said as she motioned to the door. “Show me the shed.”

Lola did so as they went out back and let Midge into the shed.

Grabbing a post hole digger, Midge raised it up. “Handy tool.” Then she grabbed a hoe. “My favorite as well. You do know the best hoe is one that never wears out, right?” She handed it to Lola

Lola paused at the joke and giggled. She nodded and felt helluva confused, but she didn’t ask questions. Following Midge out, they went to the front area garden.

Midge walked along while staring at the ground. “Yep, lookee there.” She pointed at the ground.

Lola stepped over, gazed down and saw it. “Cigarette butts and footprints.”

“Yep, so this is the spot where the trespasser keeps a watch out on your house.”

Lol shivered as she felt the violation keenly now that she had seen physical evidence of it.

“So this is also where you have too many gophers.”

Lola watched as Midge made hole after hole.

Midge paused and told her. “Now, I need you to just push the excess grass over the hole, woulda please?”

Lola nodded and she finally got the idea. “You think my gophers are gonna make this guy break an ankle?”

“Let’s hope so sweet ems.” Midge nodded. “Let’s hope so.”

When they were done, they went back to the shed to drop off their tools then headed into the house.

“Cuppa tea?” Lola asked her.

“Sounds mighty fine.” Midge nodded.

After the teapot whistled and they had their tea in cups, they sat quietly and relaxed.

“Midge?’ Lola said.

“Yes, sweet ums?’

“How...” Lola faltered then asked, “How come you don’t get scared?”

Looking over at her Midge laughed. “Oh, I do. I’ve faced death a few times. I have said prayers in desperation, but after my John died, I realized it was up to me to face it all myself.” She leaned forward and patted Lola’s hand. “I just grit my teeth and smile my way through it. Well, I also make sure I have something to blow their heads off too.” She chuckled.
