Lola laughed. “So grit your teeth and smile?”

“Yep, but always have a weapon on ya to back that smile up, girl. And speaking of that, I’ve been meaning to give you something.” Midge took out a small box from her pocket and slid it across the table to Lola.

Lola looked down at it. “What’s this? It isn’t my birthday.”

“Yes, in a way it is,” Midge said and took a sip of her tea. “Today is your officially new birthday. From now on, you will arm yourself. You will not let any man or woman for that matter, hurt you or yours.” She shook her head. “Now, I know we love our men and they can fight anything, protecting us at all times. But sometimes, it will be up to you.” She shrugged. “Besides, it matches the pearls.”

Lola tilted her head at her words then opened the little box. Staring down at it, she paused. “It’s got a pearl um... handle?”

Midge beamed at her. “I admit, I’m partial to pearls of all kinds, but this here is a special little gadget. I name them all because they can be a girl’s best friend.” She raised the pearl gadget from the little box. “See, this here is Mademoiselle .”

Lola chuckled. “Oh?” And what does she do?”

Midge held it in her hand like a fidget spinner then pressed the button on the pearly surface. A blade popped out and three brass rings and she gripped it in her hand like a knuckle blade.

Lola gasped and then laughed. “Oh, wow. That is lethal.”

“It can be.” Midge thumbed the button and the blade popped back in like it had never been there. Handing it to Lola she said. “Just like the pearl necklace, keep this on you at all times.”

“Where?”

“Well, missy.” Midge smirked at her. “Your bra would be best.”

“Oh, really?” Lola raised both eyebrows at her.

“Why yes.” Midge raised her teacup up. “Mademoiselle loves lace.”

Both women laughed.

After they agreed that Midge was gonna visit again tomorrow, Midge kissed her cheek and headed back to the compound.

She knew Silas would be at the compound for a while, so Midge went to the garage at the clubhouse and got her scooter. Painted in an emerald green, it had a large daisy sticker on the manifold. She took her keys out and started it up. Looking around, she then reached into the deep pockets of the overshirt she wore. Peering down, she checked the clip on her pearl handled Colt 45. “I got my lil Lucy, so we are good to go.” She then dropped it back into her pocket.

She got on the small bike and took her phone out. Tapping the screen, she greeted Silas when he answered, “Hey sugar man. I’m taking my scooter home.” She paused when he got concerned. “Nah, Silas, it's only three miles. I’ll be okay. Loves ya and be home for dinner, K?” She smacked a kiss into the speaker and tapped the screen then dropped the cell into her other pocket.

Starting her scooter, she made her way out through the gates and turned down the county road. “Been a long time since I had a good old fashioned bike ride through the countryside.”

Riding along at a fairly good pace, she found herself singing,

Hello are you free tonight?

I like your looks

I love your smile

Could I use you for a while?

It's all wrong but it's all right

... The amber sunset glow has died

My needs are very much alive

Is it okay if I stop by?

It's all wrong but it's all right!

Laughing, Midge said, “Loves ya Dolly. Ain’t no one better when it comes to a good song.”
