Lola smiled as tears welled in her eyes. She could only hope she lived long enough to see them get what they were after and the end of her nightmare. She glanced over at Creed and was shocked to find him staring back at her with a hunger in his eyes. Funny, how she didn’t feel afraid of the large man now. You’d think he would be angry about her trying to steal his bike, but he wasn’t. In his eyes were many things she couldn’t identify and that bothered her a little. But she could see a hunger that she understood all too well. She only wondered if he would act on it. Did she want him to?

“Okay, let’s eat,” Silas ordered.

Lola broke her gaze lock with Creed and grabbed a sandwich from the huge plate Silas sat down on the table. Hunger in her belly won out. But some odd feeling was settling inside her. It had just now started to grow when she’d gazed into Creed’s green eyes.

Bits of Silas...

“The police in Killeen?” Midge snorted. “Yeah, right. They were dirty, almost like the police in Bryan. Micha pays them well with cartel money to keep them out of their business. Oh, there are a few good cops in Bryan but they can’t do the job they need to do as long as Ed Bagley is in office as police Captain. And I’m sorry I just don’t know any other authorities who can stop them.”

“But we do.” Creed looked up at her. He looked over at his dad and his sons. “In fact, we know an FBI agent if the route goes through different states. That’s federal jurisdiction.”

“Harry’s boy Quint?” Silas asked.

Tate nodded. “It might work if we can figure out what evidence she’s got.” He looked over at Midge. “Lady, I hope you got more than just a visual ID on these people. That isn’t going to stand up in court.”

Midge snorted. “Of course, I got more than just my word for this shit. Give me a little credit here, boy.” She looked over at Silas and just shook her head. “He’s a lot like his old man isn’t he?”

Silas raised an eyebrow. “I happen to think that’s a bonus sweetheart, not a mark against him.”

“Yeah, you would,” Midge said under her breath as she got to her feet. Her body was feeling the jolt the car took when it hit the truck. She tried not to show it but she was really hurting now.

“Nana, are you okay?” Kimber asked as she watched the old lady try to walk.

Midge decided she just couldn’t do it and as she sat down, she looked over at Bear. “John, can you go to the room I was in last night before I was so rudely tossed out and get my bag? The brown tote?”

Silas looked at her and told Bear, “I put it in the closet.”

Bear got to his feet and took off for Silas’s room. When he returned a few minutes later, he was carrying a small brown tote. He set the tote on the table and looked at his grandmother. “Now what?”

Midge pulled the tote close and opened it. Taking out three notebooks she laid them out on the table.

Tate grabbed one and began thumbing through it.

Creed picked up another and Bear picked up the third one.

Twenty minutes later, Creed laid down his book. “Make the call dad. This will break up the cartel’s hold here.”

Tate laid down his book and nodded. “Yes son, it will. It will also put everyone’s lives here in danger once the bastard Micha figures out what’s going on. Does he know you’ve got this information?”

Midge shrugged.

Tate looked over at Bear. “Joyce is your mother, boy, your blood. If we turn this over to the FBI, she’ll either die in the crossfire or die in prison. Are you going to be okay with that?”

Bear looked up at a man he’d come to respect and the father of his soon to be wife. “Yes sir. I can live with that. Joyce never was much of a mother and she abandoned her family a long time ago. I’m not really surprised by her deeds. I’m only surprised she hasn’t been caught yet.”

“Well, the evidence in these notebooks will fry her little ass when it’s known,” Tate assured him. “This shows she’s one of the three kingpins in this enterprise. Your Nana took out the first one and quite possibly the most dangerous one, but don’t think Micha or Joyce are any less dangerous. They will go down fighting for their lives because they have to. They aren’t going to miss taking your Nana out and trying to take you out either. Your lives might be on the line here as well.” He shook his head. “She isn’t going to want to go down alone and...”

“She’ll figure she can’t hang more than once for murder,” Midge completed his statement. She looked over at her grandson John. “I’m sorry kiddo. I guess when I started this, I was mad and wanted justice for my John. I guess I didn’t think this all the way through.”

An hour later, she went back out into the kitchen and found everyone was busy. The girls were making supper and the men were making plans.

There was another man there with them and when she joined them Bear made the intros, “Nan, this is Quint Slattern. He’s the FBI agent who helped out Kimber’s brother Harry. They were looking for Annie's sister and helped bring down a human trafficking ring over in Jasper a few months ago.”

Midge shook his hand. That sounded impressive and she hoped he would help in this too.
