Quint looked at her notebooks as he asked, “Are you the one that collected all this information?”

“Yes, it was me and a couple other people, why?” Midge asked.

“Are the others still alive?” Quint asked.

“No, they aren’t,” Midge admitted begrudgingly.

“You do realize that if you turn this over to the FBI you could be signing your own death warrant right?” Quint raised his gaze to her. “I need you to understand that before we even start this investigation.”

Silas sat up and frowned. “What the hell does that even mean?”

Midge turned to Silas and the rest of the men sitting there as well as their girlfriends and wives whatever the case may have been. “He means this is a can of worms and do I really want to open it. This information is just one tip of a very big iceberg and there could be several more layers underneath the surface that we don’t know about yet. It could take years to get to the center of it.”

“This cartel?” Quint motioned toward the papers. “Is a particularly nasty one. The authorities in Mexico won’t even touch it. Everything and everyone connected to them has a price. Blood or money, they pay the price. This connection is not a very stable one nor is it very profitable as the dealers are using the product they are supposed to be selling.”

Midge nodded. “Word on the street is that the cartel itself is looking into why their numbers are so low. Everyone is afraid the cartel is going to come and clean up the mess Joyce and her friends are making. I even heard that a couple weeks ago, the cartel sent their own man in to find out what was going on and Micha got mad about it. Now Micha on a good day, is not someone you want to mess with but Micha on a bad day is usually a day when everyone hides.”

“What do you know about that day?” Quint asked her.

“I know what they wanted to do with the body,” she finally admitted.

An eerie silence followed her words.

“You said you know what they wanted to do with the body?” Quint repeated. “What did they do with it?”

“At first, when the man from the cartel showed up, Micha and Joel were surprised when he started asking questions. They didn’t think the cartel had anything to say about how they ran their place in the lineup but this guy wouldn’t take their shit. The more questions he asked, the madder Micha was getting.”

Quint held up his hand. “How do you know all this? You’re talking as if you were a witness.”

Midge just stared at him. “Micha thinks he runs that part of Bryan. He’s got police protection so he doesn’t bother to hide what he’s doing. The people living and working around him just don’t matter to him. When this guy wanted to go inside to ask questions Micha told him they didn’t have to go anywhere, they could talk right there.”

Quint stopped her again. “You were there. You saw what happened that day didn’t you?”

“Yes I did, as did about twenty other people. Granted, most of them are people living on the streets but they are still people.”

Quint looked over at Tate and the others. “This could be bad, very bad.”

“Cartel vengeance.” Tate nodded.

“If they know about it,” Quint added.

“They know about it,” Midge informed them.

The men just stared at her.

Bear finally broke the silence. “How do they know Nana? What did you do?”

Midge snorted. “I didn’t do anything you nitwit. Micha cut his own throat this time. After they beat that boy to death, Micha was still running high and he called the cartel to tell them he found their errand boy.” She shook her head. “That stupid ass told them himself what he did. But he told them not to worry, they would dispose of the body and continue to business. They talked about chopping it up for fish bait and they even left to go find something they could use to do the deed with. I couldn’t let them do that, so me and a couple of friends I know moved the body. I couldn’t just leave him in the streets like that. We cleaned it up the best we could after we took pictures and we buried it in holy ground. I know we should have turned it over to the police, but I just couldn’t do it.” Midge shook her head. “After all that young man might have been a criminal but he was someone’s son first. His mother might still care about him. I even had a priest give him a blessing.”

“Is that when you came out here?” Silas wanted to know.

Midge nodded. “I guess I didn’t think things out very well, did I? I just wanted somewhere to go where no one knew me for a while. My friends in Bryan are doing the same. They don’t want to be anywhere near that place either. This isn’t going to fade away as easily as Micha seems to think and they don’t want to be casualties of the war they know is coming.”

Quint nodded. “We’ve already seen an uptake in certain people coming up from Mexico. We are on alert already with the strange activity but we just didn’t know why. Well, this would be why.” He ran his hands over the top and back of his head. “This could get very bad, very quickly.”

“This bastard Micha just started a war on the streets of Bryan.” Tate growled. “He won’t even care how many innocent people die needlessly.”

“Or it could just be him and his own,” Midge told them.
