“What?” I can feel the tightness returning.

“Hear me out,” Stephanie says. “Whatever the reason someone posted that ad or whatever online, you still have to go to the dance. Maybe pretend to be okay with it. If they posted it to embarrass you or make you upset, you won’t let it. If they posted it, meaning well, then it worked. Either way you win. You’ve already had two guys ask you to the dance. Now you don’t have to stress about finding someone.”

I blow out a breath of air. “Maybe you’re right,” I say. “But guaranteed good time?”

“What? You are a fun person to be around. Whoever takes you to prom will be lucky they get to spend a whole evening with my awesome best friend. Guaranteed they will have a good time.”

I glare at her.

“Yeah, you’re right. It sounds really bad,” she says, stifling a laugh.

As we pull up to my house, my jaw drops.

“Now, how are you going to decide between these two guys?” Stephanie says.

“Three,” I say, pointing to my front yard.

“Three?” Stephanie asks. She notices what I’m staring at, and I fear her eyes might pop out of her head.

There, on my front lawn, are huge blue sparkly letters standing up in the grass. They have to be three or four feet tall. It reads: PROM? There is a huge bouquet of balloons on one side of the sign. Standing on the other side, holding up his phone to record my surprise, is the student body president.

My throat suddenly feels very dry. “Do you have any water?” I croak.

“Is that Ethan Hayden?” Stephanie asks. She sounds as shocked as I feel.

I nod, not sure I believe it myself. Ethan is tall, blonde, and hilariously funny. Everyone loves him. He has the most followers out of anyone at school, by far. I’m pretty sure that’s how he got to be student body president.

“So,” Stephanie says, “Who’s it going to be? The jock, the nerd, or the influencer?”

I throw my head against the headrest and groan. “I have no idea!”

“Well, you better get out of the car,” Stephanie says. “You don’t want to keep Master Hayden waiting.

I step from the car. My feet feel like lead as I move toward Ethan. He is all grins, which makes me smile.

“Hey Prom Queen!” Ethan says, approaching me.

“Uh…hey,” I say back. I try and remember the last time I actually shared words with Ethan. No memories come to mind.

“Do you have the wrong house?” I ask.

Ethan laughs. “Of course not, beautiful. I’m here to prompose to you! So how bout it? Do you want to say yes, and make my teen boy dreams come true? Or do you want to say no and break my heart, in front of all those watching?”

He flips the camera around and pouts for his audience.

“Ummm, well, here’s the thing,” I say. “You’re the third one to ask me to prom today.”

This does not seem to deter Ethan one bit. In fact, it seems to energize him. He continues to grin for the camera. While I probably look like a ridiculous mess, frozen in place, and unsure of how to act. I look up at Stephanie. She waves before driving away. Traitor.

“Well, you heard it folks,” Ethan says. “Sounds like we have ourselves a friendly little competition. Do me a solid, let’s get that team Ethan hashtag going on the socials. I’ll put a poll up on my channel and you can all help me convince my girl, Emma here, to choose me for prom over those other basic guys.

Another competition? I did not sign up for this. Any of it!

Ethan finally slips his phone into his pocket and grins at me. “That was epic,” he says. “I bet it’ll have a thousand views in just a few minutes. And, if we’re lucky, the hashtag and competition will go viral.”

“Viral?” I croak. My mouth is still painfully dry.

“Absolutely,” he says. “Here, let’s get a selfie.” Ethan snaps a picture of the two of us in front of his prom-posal sign. I try and smile, but I’m still reeling from the events of the day. “I’ll check in with you later,” Ethan says. He starts walking toward his car. “And take your time deciding,” he says with a grin. “Let’s play this out for a while.”
