“Gosh, Emma, I’m sorry they did that to you.”
“Who would do such a thing?”
“Tragic.”
My phone keeps buzzing like crazy in my back pocket. No doubt more people are letting me know how they’ve been on my side the whole time.
I see Jaron in the hall, but he walks the other direction. My heart sinks. He hasn’t text me since the video came out last night. He hasn’t called. Not even an owl. I was hoping to talk to him today, but I’m afraid he doesn’t want to see me.
“Oh no, that boy does not get to walk away from you like that,” Stephanie says. She runs after Jaron before I can stop her.
“Hey!” she yells. He turns around quickly.
“Hi Stephanie.”
“Did you see Emma’s video?”
“Umm, yeah I did, but—”
“But what? She asked for your forgiveness.”
“I know but—”
“I don’t want excuses, dude. She really likes you. And I know you like her. I think you both need to forgive each other and move on.”
“Okay, I just—”
“If it’s okay, then why haven’t you talked to her yet?”
“Because I—”
“I think you’re making a mistake, Jaron. I think you’ll regret it if you don’t—”
“Stephanie!” Jaron finally gets a word in.
“What?” she asks, surprised.
“Will you let me finish a sentence?”
“If you must.”
Jaron glares at her and she gives him her most innocent smile in return.
“I was trying to say that yes, I want to talk to Emma. But I just hadn’t seen her yet today.”
“Well, it’s your lucky day because she’s right over there,” Stephanie says, pointing to me.
Jaron looks up and our eyes meet. I smile shyly. He walks over to me. As he approaches, we’re met by whistles and cat calls. He bends down and whispers in my ear.
“Meet at our spot,” he says. “Give me a ten second head start.” His warm breath leaves tingles on my neck. Then he strides away.
I approach Stephanie. “Why did you do that?” I ask.
“Because I know you put your heart and soul into that video and I was not going to let him ignore you.”
“You’re such a dork,” I say. “And I love you for it. Now go to class. I’ll see you at lunch.”
Stephanie smiles wide. “I see,” she says. “Going to do a little studying?” She makes a purring sound.
