“Clearly I was absent on the day we learned how to be a girl.”

Tessa laughs. “No, you just have different priorities. I totally envy the way you don’t care what others think about you. Sometimes I care way too much.”

Did Tessa seriously just say she enviesme? I can’t even wrap my mind around her words.

“We better get started,” she says. “We can’t have you being late for your date.”

Tessa helps me get the lighting right as we set up my phone to record on my desk. She sits me down in the chair and starts the stream.

“Are you excited to go out with Jaron?” she asks, as she begins with eye shadow.

The butterflies inside me awaken at the mention of his name.

I smile. “Of course I am. Jaron is kind, and protective, and a gentleman. I can’t wait to see what he planned for tonight.”

Tessa squeals. I laugh. She asks questions about the guys and my last two dates, while she makes me beautiful. Talking to her is so easy, it doesn’t take long to forget the camera is on. The moment she finishes, the doorbell rings. We both smile. She stops the stream and hands me my phone.

“Have a great time,” she says.

I give her a hug. “Thank you.”

“Can I have my girlfriend back now?” Dylan asks, stepping into my room. He looks at me and adds, “You weren’t supposed to make her look good. I thought this was a sabotage mission.”

Tessa whacks his arm and he laughs. I smile. I didn’t fail to notice that my brother just said I looked good. Then I race downstairs to answer the door.

Jaron’s smile reaches all the way up to his eyes. He steps through my open front door and wraps his strong arms around my waist. In one fluid motion he picks me up and swings me around in a circle. When he stops, my feet are dangling several inches off the floor. His fingers then crawl up to my ribs and tickles them a little. I squirm and we both laugh.

“Ah hem!”

Jaron sets me down quickly and we both turn to face Dad.

His face looks firm, but his eyes are smiling. “You better take good care of my daughter tonight.” My heart twinges at that. He wasn’t here to greet Austin or Ethan, but he is definitely here to greet his own player.

Jaron nods and folds his hands behind his back. “Yes, sir.”

“And don’t stay out too late, you’ve got a big game tomorrow.”

Jaron nods once again. He looks stiff and solemn, like a soldier awaiting orders.

Then Dad’s mouth twitches. He relaxes his face into a smile. “I’m just giving you a hard time, son,” he says, slapping Jaron on the back. “You guys have fun. Be back around 11:00.”

Jaron releases a tense breath and shakes Dad’s hand. “Thanks, Coach.”

“Bye, Dad,” I say, rolling my eyes at him.

Jaron shakes his head as we walk out to his car. “Man, I’ve only seen your dad like that when we’re losing against a lower ranked team. My heart is still racing,” he chuckles.

“Sorry about him,” I say. “He has an odd sense of humor.”

“Did he give the other guys a hard time too?” Jaron asks. He pulls open the passenger door of his mom’s blue minivan. I wait until he makes his way around the car and climbs into the driver’s seat.

“He actually didn’t even talk to the other guys,” I say.

Jaron stiffens and looks over at me. “Really?”

“Yeah,” I say. Then seeing Jaron’s nervous expression, I quickly add, “But take that as a compliment! You are the only one he is comfortable around. Comfortable enough to tease.”

Jaron relaxes back into his seat.
