“He didn’t even come out of his den to say goodbye before my last date.”

Jaron nods and starts the car. “I wouldn’t have guessed your dad as the shy type. From what I’ve seen as my coach, I thought he was more of the type to be cleaning his gun when suitors arrived to take his daughter out.”

“Suitors?” I laugh.

Jaron chuckles along with me. “I didn’t know what else to call it.”

“Dates?” I suggest.

Jaron puts on a fake British accent. “I dunno darling, a little birdie told me you’ve seen everyPride & Prejudicemovie. I assumed you’d prefer fancy terms like suitor.”

I try and match Jaron’s accent, but I’m terrible at it. We both end up laughing.

I snap a picture of us together, before he drives away.

“Oh man,” he says. “You’re really going to share a picture of my driving this giant van?” He makes a face. “Can you at least photoshop us into a Corvette or something cooler?”

“No one can tell what kind of car it is,” I say, laughing. “It’s just our faces.”

Jaron shrugs. “I still think a convertible or something in the background would be cool.” He reaches up to turn on the music. The van is filled with children’s voices. “The wheels on the bus go round and round…”

Jaron quickly switches to a radio station. “Sorry about that,” he says. “I was hoping to borrow my dad’s car tonight, but he’s still at work. I’m just glad you only got a picture and not a video.”

I shrug and look around the van. There are a couple car seats strapped into the back. The floor is littered with papers and toys. I hadn’t really noticed at first. It’s clear the front has recently been cleaned.

“No worries,” I say.

Jaron glances in the back. “I hate driving my mom’s van. It’s always a mess.”

“Do you have younger brothers and sisters?” I ask.

Jaron laughs. “I have five. All sisters.”

“You have six kids in your family?” I know my face must look shocked because Jaron laughs again.

“Yeah,” he says. “My parents really like each other.” He winks at me.

“And you’re the oldest?”

“I am,” Jaron says.

“What’s it like?” I ask. “I’m the oldest too, but I imagine having five younger siblings is very different than just having one.”

Jaron shrugs. “It’s not too bad, most of the time. I end up babysitting a lot more than I’d like. But my parents get how important baseball is to me and they’re supportive when I have games and practices.”

“And you’re the only boy?”

“Yup. It’s kinda fun being the big brother though. I’ll be the one intimidating the guys who want to take out my little sisters someday.”

The more I find out about Jaron, the cuter he becomes.

“Do you ever wish you had a brother?” I ask.

“Every now and then I do. I’m surrounded by pink most of the time. But it only takes a few minutes in the locker room after a game to make me grateful for sisters.”

I laugh. “I bet.”

Jaron pulls into the driveway of a small, but well-kept house. The house is white with blue shutters and trim. The paint looks bright and fresh. There’s a tree in the front yard with a homemade swing hanging down from the branches. The front flower beds are filled with brightly colored azaleas and pansies.A cute, white fence surrounds the front yard. I’m in awe as Jaron opens my door and I step closer.
