Still no reaction, no movement.

Holding her upright, I waited for what seemed like eons for Aiden and Triaten to break free the shackles on her ankles.

The thought, very distinct and pounding in my mind—that my brother could have just very well taken her away from me—would not allow me to think beyond this one moment in time.

Her body free from the cross, I picked her up, making sure the sheet fully wrapped her. Cradling her head against my chest, praying to all the gods I didn’t believe in to let her hear my heartbeat, to let the pounding of it bring her back to me.

I didn’t know where to turn. Where to go.

Leo appeared in front of me.

“My SUV is waiting at the top. They’ll take you to my compound.”

I blinked.

Get her out of here. Yes. That was what needed to happen.

His words clicked my brain back into motion.

I nodded to him, then flicked my head back toward Aiden and Triaten behind me. “These two are going to want to come with me.”

“Into the compou?—”

“They are fucking coming with me, Leo.”

He nodded, taking a step to the side and I had a clear view of Cletus’s body slumped on the floor. “Drive an augentrum blade down his neck and into his fucking nonexistent heart and then burn him from the inside out.”

Leo nodded.

I started to walk past him. “Leo—a healer. Where is Helga?”

Leo fell in step beside me. “Vivian is closer. She’s better.”

“When did that happen?”

“Two years ago after Helga lost her left thumb.”

“Get fucking Vivian then. Now.”

Leo glanced at Ada in my arms before his look snapped back up to my face. He nodded, his phone already to his ear and he dropped behind me to trail Aiden and Triaten.

Quick, but I saw it.

He thought Ada was done for.

She was breathing.

Breathing but unconscious.

I wasn’t anxious about her breathing—our species were designed to keep breathing no matter what—it was what was happening in her brain I was worried about.

The healer had come and gone. Healed the vulnerable spot on her arm, the flesh that had once held the panthenite breeder’s tattoo already near to grown back. Fixed the membranes in her nose where Cletus had gone into her skull. But she couldn’t do anything about Ada’s brain.

For all the fucking powers malefics and panthenites had, we were just as helpless as humans when it came to brain matter.
