“But maybe next time you’re in a relationship with someone and want to make it memorable, buy matching jewelry instead,” Xavier added. “It’s easier to remove a necklace than a tattoo.”

I was feeling thirsty, so I went to get some cold water. The fridge was still as empty as it had been the day before, and I wondered what they ate.

“Do you guysalwayseat takeout?” I asked.

The guys looked at each other as though this was the first time anyone had mentioned it.

“It’s just easier,” Jackson said. “We’re too busy at the end of the day that having something delivered works well for us.”

I filled a glass and put the pitcher back in the fridge.

“That can’t be healthy.”

Xavier shrugged.

“We train at the gym; we don’t smoke or do drugs. Is it really a big deal if we eat pizza and noodles?”

“It is if you’re not eating enough vegetables,” I said. “Veggies really are superfoods — they reduce your risk of dozens of lifestyle diseases, including cancer.”

“Well — ” Jackson looked at the piles of bread and dip on the table. “You’ve gotta die from something, right?”

I felt my jaw clench. Like Xavier said, your body, your choice, right? But on the other hand, I liked these guys. They’d hauled Nathan out of the shop and they were protecting me. If Xavier could protect people from getting an elephant’s trunk tattooed on their dick, surely I could protect these guys from what they were doing to themselves.

“You don’t want cancer,” I said, my voice flat. “I watched my mom die from it — it’s slow, painful, and devastating. I promise, anything else is better.”

There was silence as they stared at me. I didn’t want to bring the mood down too much, so I backtracked before they could ask questions I’d rather not answer.

“Why don’t you let me cook for you sometime?” I asked. “I’m not very good at it, but it’s going to be healthier than takeout.”

The guys looked at each other.

“Sure, that sounds great!” Xavier said. “Give me a list and I’ll buy anything you need tomorrow.”

Since the food came in boxes and we’d used napkins as plates, all we had to do after dinner was tuck our forks and glasses into the dishwasher, and throw the boxes in the trash. Adrian tried to catch my eye and I avoided it, not trusting myself to keep my hands off him.

It only took me a few days to flick through all the books I was interested in, and after that, there wasn’t much to do in the apartment.

I could have gone down to the gym, but the idea of looking up and seeing the cameras made my embarrassment feel too fresh.

It was almost impossible to stop thinking about what I’d done with Adrian. Every time my thoughts drifted away from what I was doing, I imagined his thick cock inside me and wanted to do it again. Things had been awkward between us, though, and I didn’t want to make him feel worse by trying to force him into a conversation.

I needed a distraction.

I called Cora and when she answered her phone, I could hear voices in the background.

“How’s everything going?” she asked. “I haven’t heard from you for a few days — I was wondering if you’d run off and eloped with that sexy tattoo artist who came by to pick up your things.”

“Oh,” I said, the mention of Adrian catching me off-guard. “You met him?”

“Just briefly,” Cora said. “He seems like a nice guy. And hot, too.”

I winced. I’d called Cora so she would me from thinking about Adrian, but instead she was encouraging my libido.

“Want to come over?”
