“Give me a second,” I said, as the tingling sensation in my pussy subsided. “Can’t… concentrate…”

Adrian leaned off the edge of the bed, picking up the sketch book from where he’d kicked it.

“I want to draw you like this,” he said. “Post-orgasmic, covered with sweat, looking like a goddess.”

I tried to snatch the pencil off him, but he pulled it away.

“That’s not fair,” I protested. “I look like shit.”

“No you don’t,” Adrian said. “You look perfect.”

The wordperfecttook me by surprise. How could he possibly think that, when I knew my hair was clinging to my face and my cheeks were red? But his expression was so sincere, I knew he wasn’t lying.

“Thank you,” I mumbled, uncomfortable with the compliment.

Adrian propped himself up with the pillows and drew, his eyes traveling over each part of my body as he sketched in quick lines. I watched, transfixed, as he worked. He clearly didn’t have Jackson’s level of experience, but his technique was still good, and the image he conjured on the page was definitely, unmistakably, me.

“See?” he said, as he turned the page around so I could see it properly. “Sexy.”

My stuffed bear had fallen on the bed when he knocked the bedside table, and I tossed it at him. It bounced off his chest and landed upside-down on the floor.

“Just for that,” he said, putting the sketch book aside and moving closer, “I think I’ll have to punish you.”

His hand steered me back down on the bed, and he climbed between my knees, his hot mouth finding my clit as I fell into another sea of bliss.

The day of Helen’s surgery approached far too quickly, and I was so nervous I might as well have been going under the knife myself.

I packed a bag full of things to keep me occupied while she was in the hospital, tossing in things I probably wouldn’t even use, and the bag was so heavy that Xavier pulled a face as he picked it up.

“What have you got in here?” he asked. “Bricks?”

“Just a few things,” I said, not wanting to admit that I’d packed my laptop, a sketchbook, my plans for the charity day and, on a whim, a deck of cards. “I always regretted not bringing my homework to keep my mind off what was happening when my mum was in surgery.”

Jackson offered me a bowl of cereal, and I shook my head. The queasy feeling that had accompanied me through so much of the past few months was back, and I hadn’t been able to eat yet today.

“I’ll get something at the hospital,” I lied, knowing that I probably wouldn’t be able to eat at all, not until I knew Helen was going to be okay. “I know there’s at least one cafe.”

“Okay,” Jackson said, raising one eyebrow like he knew I was too anxious to eat. “Just take care of yourself, alright? I’d hate to work so hard to keep Nathan away and have you die of starvation.”

Despite my anxiety, I smiled. It was sweet the way they were taking care of me.

“What about coffee?” Adrian asked, and I wasn’t up to that either, so he made a fresh batch and poured some into a travel mug.

“One for the road,” he said, and I took it gratefully and held it in the car as Xavier drove, letting its warmth spread through my hands.

Helen was ready to go when we arrived, and I moved to the back seat so she could sit in the front. She climbed in and gave me a tired smile.

“One day I’m going to get used to this,” she said. “You’d think I wouldn’t be so afraid, but I am every time.”

“I get it,” I said. “My mom never stopped getting nervous, even after all the treatment they gave her. And neither did I.”

Xavier glanced at me in the rear-view mirror and I smiled wearily.

The traffic was thick, and we took longer than I’d expected to get to the hospital, but we’d allowed plenty of time. Helen already knew where to go, and Xavier and I followed.
