Wyatt crashed his car into Tom and Daisy’s sedan. Isn’t that funny?

Now he’s fallen out of a window. Isn’t that hilarious?

There would be no awards forPushing Daisy— no serious ones, at least — and no Oscar-worthy scripts coming my way as a result of doing this. But hopefully it would put me on the next rung of the ladder and win me roles I never had access to in the past.

Hopefully, one day, I’d work my way up to the kind of meaty, clever project that I craved.

“We’d better clean this before someone steps in it,” Kyla said in character as Daisy, gesturing to the puddle on the floor.

Right on cue, I marched onto the set, stepped squarely in the water, and allowed my foot to kick out ahead of me while I fell on my ass.

Cue the canned laughter, I thought, as Kyla held out a hand to help me up.

Her palm was warm, and she looked at me with genuine concern. The first time we’d filmed this scene, she whispered, “Are you okay?” but after Preston told her off, took to squeezing my hand and flicking her eyes over my body as though she were checking for broken bones.

It was a sweet gesture — nobody else seemed to care whether I’d hurt myself, not even the stunt coordinator — but I was fine. I’d practiced these stunts over and over again in my acting classes, and I knew how to land on the ground, so my butt absorbed most of the impact, rather than my spine. The key to making it believable, I’d learned, was all about the facial expression: it happened so fast that it didn’t matter how safely I landed, as long as the expression on my face was one of pure shock.

“Cut!” Preston called. “That wasn’t too bad. Let’s take a break and come back after lunch.”

I rubbed my ass as I walked back to where I’d left my cell phone and wallet.

“Wyatt,” a female voice called after me, and I turned to find Kyla there, gazing at me with her ice-blue eyes.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“I was wondering if you could help me.” She looked down at the phone and wallet in my hand. “Not now if you’re busy, but at some point.” Her eyes met mine again, and she licked the sexy cupid’s bow on her top lip. “I need to learn how to act.”

“From me?” I was confused for a moment. Dean and Isaac were right there, chatting with Preston and watching the scene play back on the monitor.

“Well, yeah.” Kyla followed my eyes. “Isaac didn’t think I should accept this role and Dean — well, he’sDean.” Her lipsspread into a smile. “He’s so hot. I don’t think I could ask him for a favor without acting like a total idiot.”

“Oh.” That made sense — she’d chosen me because I was the least intimidating option, not because she thought I was the best actor. Kyla must have seen the expression on my face because she backtracked.

“Oh no, I didn’t mean — you’re hot, too — let me start again.” She scrunched her eyes and shook her head as her cheeks grew crimson. “Shit, I didn’t mean to say you’re hot, not to your face at least —”

I couldn’t help smiling at how flustered she was.

“It’s okay, I’ll help you… even though I’m not as hot as Dean.” Even though I wanted to put her out of her misery, I couldn’t help teasing her just a little.

Her cheeks became a shade more vibrant.

“Acting looks so simple when you guys do it. I thought knowing the lines would be enough, but I feel like if I don’t get some help, I’ll screw up the movie.”

“Lesson number one,” I said, holding up my index finger like a teacher. “Don’t let Preston get to you. Everyone knows he’s a dick — he’s a money guy, not a creative guy. His only priority is to make millions of dollars. You’re actually doing okay.”

“Noted,” Kyla said with a small smile. “Ignore Preston’s insults. What’s lesson number two?”

I tilted my head to one side, thinking about how I would approach the role of Daisy if I was her. There were so many options, but most of them would take too long — it wasn’t like I could put her through a semester or two of acting school before she took on the role.

We would have to speed everything up.

I crooked my finger, beckoning for her to follow me, and smiled.

“Come with me.”
