“Do you have any questions?”

I hesitated. There was only one thing that I needed to know.

“My friend April applied as well. Can you tell me if she’s been picked too?”

There was a sharp intake of air on the other end of the phone.

“I’m sorry,” Marina said, and my heart sank. “I can’t disclose information about other applicants. But she should hear from us by tomorrow.”

I thanked her for her time and hung up with anxiety gnawing at my stomach. Did that mean that April wouldn’t be in the movie? I raced out to the cafe to see Bob behind the counter and April perched on one of the plush armchairs, with her phone against her ear and a massive smile on her face.

As soon as she hung up, she ran over and hugged me so hard, her chocolate-colored hair whipped around her head and I ended up with a mouthful of ponytail.

“We’re going to be famous!”

Icouldn’t focus for the rest of the week.

For the first time since I’d worked at the cafe, I mixed up orders, forgot substitutions and mis-calculated someone’s change. When I tried to read my book, the words swam in front of me as I imagined myself on screen with four of the hottest actors in Hollywood.

Dean Hart, Isaac Williams, Wyatt Cole, and Brooke Hayes.

I’d known the movie would be an exciting experience, but until I’d received Marina’s information package containing the cast list, I hadn’t anticipated what a big deal this movie was. It wasn’t an independent film or something that would get a limited screening — it was an A-list Hollywood blockbuster, full of top-tier names.

And after five excruciating days of waiting, it would start filming tomorrow!

“You’re both space cadets,” Bob said, as he ran a damp cloth over a puddle of steamed milk that April had spilled on the counter. “Anyone would think you’ve won the lottery — this is just a movie.”

April stared at him, the empty milk jug dangling from her hand.

“Just a movie! You know it’ll star Dean Hart, right? One of the biggest movie stars on the planet?”

Bob’s eyebrows rose and I could tell he had no idea who Dean was.

“And Isaac Williams and Wyatt Cole,” I added. Wyatt was a comedian, famous for slapstick humor and frat-boy hijinks, so I didn’t expect Bob to share our excitement for meeting him, but even old people had heard of Isaac: he was a respected British theater actor who’d transitioned into serious movie roles and whose name appealed to everyone.

And Dean... well, Dean was the kind of guy whose posters might have adorned my bedroom walls, if he’d been famous ten years earlier. He was capital H-O-Thot. His dark floppy hair, piercing blue eyes and dimpled smile were intoxicating. The last time I’d seen one of his movies, I’d emerged from the theater feeling like the slightest breeze between my legs would give me an orgasm.

Despite the high-profile cast, Bob still didn’t look impressed. He wrung the milk out of his cloth into a cleaning bucket and leaned against the counter.

“It’s not that busy.” He jerked his chin toward the half-empty seating area. “Why don’t you take the afternoon off? Use the time to learn your lines or practice writing your autograph for fans.”

“We don’t have any lines,” April pointed out. “We’re extras. They didn’t even give us a copy of the script.”

Bob gave her a kind look.

“Well, get plenty of rest then. Go. Before I change my mind.”

April looked like she was about to argue again, so I grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the door that saidStaff Only. We grabbed our bags and hurried to the parking lot, where my blue Holden was parked next to her hatchback.

“Wanna come over and film some content?” April asked as she eased her bag off her shoulder and dropped it in the trunk. Over the past few months, she had built a small but loyal following on social media. She filmed a bit of everything: dance routines, makeup tutorials, and whatever was trending.

“No thanks.” We climbed into our cars. Unlike April, I wasn’t keen on having my private life broadcast to the world. “I’d rather hang out with my dad.”

I didn’t tell her that ever since I’d found out that Dean, Isaac, and Wyatt were going to star inPushing Daisy, I’d been watching their movies with my dad. Or technically, I’d been watching themnext tohim, because he usually ended up snoring before the midpoint of the movie.
