Seb snickers at me and mumblesdumbasseryunder his breath. Neither of them argues though. Colton has been on with the Marshals for longer than we have and has had multiple close calls. I really don’t even understand how the guy still has a job. It’s not that he is being outsmarted or that his cases are really difficult. He's just fucking lazy and doesn’t put the effort in to ensure his charge is safe.

Negligence gets people killed. So far the guy has gotten lucky but luck always runs out.

“You almost done, Seb?” I ask as I tuck my own Glock into the back of my jeans. Yep, jeans. My favorite part about this job is that we are supposed to blend. Not that we blend all that well considering we are all massive and pierced or tattooed. But you get the gist. We don’t scream federal employees which helps in our line of work.

Seb nods and starts piecing his weapon back together while I double-check that I have everything packed in my bag. Spencer wasn’t able to tell us a timeline for this job, but he was hoping that we would be willing to do it long-term. While I couldn’t saynoto the case, I definitelycouldargue that I didn’t want long-term. We ended up having to meet in the middle and agreeing to revisit the topic at a later time.

Which isn’t really meeting in the middle at all but I’m gonna keep deluding myself.Revisit at a later dateis Spencer's code for he doesn’t feel like arguing so leave his office and go do your job.

Maddox grabs his duffle off the ground when Seb stands up and gets situated. It's going to be a long fucking drive to Colorado. We don’t fly to our cases because our SUV is valuable. It’s bulletproof, blends in well, and has all the bells and whistles. Despite most teams just getting a car at whatever site they go to, we didn’t want to lose out on functionality. And having a car that can withstand fucking bullets can come in handy.

“Let's go,” Madd grumbles, not waiting for us as he exits the apartment. He’s been exceptionally grumpy since we left the brief. I wanted to say no to taking it simply because I didn’t want to deal with whatever crawled up his ass but I knew better. He would have flown off the handle if I used him as an excuse.

Once we get settled into our seats and buckle up, we automatically take off. We won’t be stopping for rest or getting hotels. The three of us will just continue to swap driving until we reach our destination. It's the smart choice considering Lucas and Dave don’t think they can handle the situation. Even the idea of taking two days to drive out to Colorado is making my skin itch. A lot can happen in that amount of time.

Seb pulls out the case file from our team's go bag and starts flipping through it before he hands me a document to review. Not only will this drive be about getting to our destination but it will also be about familiarizing ourselves with the ins and outs.

We have all kinds of shit to go through. Medical reports, witness statements, each of the different teams has their case report, her employment history with Spence, and info regarding Rodrigo and his shitty band of fucktards. It’s going to take us the entire fucking drive just to get through her immense file. I’m not complaining, I like having something to do. But it’s honestly more than I thought there would be. Spence has this girl’s entire life documented to the T.

My blood fucking boils just reading the initial assessment of her injuries that night. It feels like such a gross invasion of privacy to know all the details about what she went through but it's also a fucking good reminder that the guy who is after her is a straight-up monster.

“Did you fucking read this?” I murmur to Seb, my lip curling as I continue to take in every detail.

Seb hums but doesn’t verbally reply. He’s pretty focused on whatever he is reading but I can tell with his tense posture that he knows how bad it is.

“What is it?” Madd asks from the driver's seat, never once taking his eyes off the road.

“Initial reports from the hospital show her as being beaten, stabbed, and most likely sexually assaulted,” I state factually.

Maddox grunts and shakes his head, “Jesus, no wonder the girl needs us to watch over her. Rodrigo is a fucking psychopath. How old was she?”

I grimace, “Fifteen.”

Madd shakes his head and his knuckles tighten on the wheel of the SUV. He doesn’t like cases that deal with women being abused. It brings up a lot of shit from his time living with his mom and dad. Another thing that our group collectively doesn’t talk about.

Seb passes another piece of paper up to me, talking before I even have a chance to glance at it, “She hacks for the Marshal Service. Like deep diving into the dark web hacking. She’s been on so many cases and found

so much information that HQ has deemed her an asset.”
