My eyebrows hit my hairline as I read the memo out loud so that Madd could stay in the loop. I let out a low impressedwhistle, “Jesus Christ, she was only eighteen when she fuckin made this team.”

Madd chuckles and a rare smile blooms on his face, “That’s fuckin cool man.”

Seb is suspiciously quiet so I turn in my seat and see him staring wide-eyed at something in the file. My brows draw together in worry as he slowly and dramatically raises his gaze to mine with his mouth gaping.

“What? What’s wrong?” I ask, worry starting to penetrate.

“Dude…” Seb murmurs, glancing back and forth between the folder and my face like he can’t decide what to look at. “She…she’s..”

“Spit it out, Sebastian,” Madd grumbles, glancing worriedly in the rearview mirror. If I have low patience, Madd has absolutely none.

“She’s super fucking hot,” Seb blurts out.

The entire car goes deathly silent until both Madd and I burst out laughing at Seb’s expense. The guy is a horny teenager. He never acts on his sexual desires, and with what he has been through it’s understandable. But he never hesitates to flirt.

But the girl could be a goddamn supermodel and it wouldn’t matter. First off, we would never cross the professional boundary. Even Seb, the goddamn child, wouldn’t do that. Secondly, none of us are equipped to handle a relationship or even a friends-with-benefits situation. And lastly, she has a fucking child.

If there’s one thing I am super aware of, it's that you don’t fuck with single moms unless you plan on sticking around. And none of us plan to stick around.

“Keep it in your pants,” I jest, smiling at my best friend who is still staring wide-eyed at the picture in the folder.

I haven’t even gotten a glimpse of the woman. I don’t think I want to if Seb’s response is any indication. I can spend the restof this drive getting my head on straight and preparing to be the Marshal that I am supposed to be. I have a goddamn job to do.

My phone vibrates and I pull it out to see a message from Lucas. He’s been in communication with us since we decided to take the job. Seems like a good dude, professional, and keeping us up to date on their travel to the new location.

Lucas:We are about two hours from Estes Park. Do you want us to start setting up the security equipment?

Wolf:Yeah, that would be good. We still have a ways to go. Figure you can sit and get her prepped for the changes before we get there.

Lucas:She’s not going to care. I’ve never met anyone as easygoing as Dakota.

Wolf:Maybe. Most protectees don’t like having to live with their watchers.

Lucas:She isn’t like most. It’ll be fine. You’ll have more trouble with Aiden trying to hang out with you.

Wolf:Doubtful.

Lucas:Can you be nice to the kid? I know your team is…not as friendly as most. But he’s a good kid.

I snort out a laugh that has Madd giving me the side eye as I read my messages out loud to him.Not as friendlyis really just a nice way of saying we are strict assholes. But we get shit done and keep our clients safe. I’m not saying that they can’t have a life, but that life will have us in it twenty-four seven. Our success rate is so high that I don’t really give a shit if the client is annoyed. They should just be happy that they are safe and breathing.

He doesn’t need to worry about the kid though. All three of us know better than to treat him poorly. Honestly, I give it a week before he has Seb wrapped around his finger. The guy is a giant teddy bear.

Probably less likely to wanna hang out with Madd or me, but I don’t mind. Neither of us is the socializing type so the kid will likely gravitate to our resident retriever. I’ll still engage if he wants me to but I won’t force him. Some people are put off by my appearance. I want to keep him safe, not give him something to be afraid of.

Wolf:You don’t need to worry. I promise we will make sure they are both safe.
