Heading into my bedroom, I grab a pair of black leggings and a pink tank top to change into before throwing my wet hair into a messy bun on my head. I don’t bother with makeup or anything. I never really felt the need to impress anyone. When Idowear makeup it's only to make myself feel good.

I head over to Aiden’s room to check on him and smile when I see him passed out on his bed, snoring lightly. He seems to have settled in okay, despite the fact that his room is kind of boring. He hung up some of his drawings and set up his gaming system so I know he’s at least attempting to make this place home.

Knowing that Aiden is down for the count, I head back to my room and collapse on my bed. I shoot my brother a text and then let myself fall into oblivion.

Chapter 7

Wolf

"The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart." – Helen Keller

Thehousewe pull up to is more of a mansion and I snicker at the fucking balls on Spence. There’s no fucking way this is within the budget. But that’s not really my problem. I’m just going to enjoy it while this job lasts.

Even Madd whistles as he glances through the windshield at the modern log cabin. It’s ridiculously nice. Even the surrounding area is beautiful - all big green trees and distance from neighbors. It shouldn’t be too difficult to set up a decent security system here. At bare minimum we will have motion sensors that let us know when anyone is nearby.

On the porch a tall lanky figure leans against the cabin wall, staring at our car with an unreadable expression. Even as all three of us climb out he doesn’t move, just standing there and observing us. It’s honestly pretty fucking creepy. If I wasn’t completely sure I could take the guy, I might actually be scared. But ya know, I can definitely take him.

As we get closer he finally stands to his full height and meets us at the steps to the porch, his expression blank…almost bored. Okaaay, definitely not a happy guy then.

“Ya’ll see that bird on your way up?” He asks beginning our initial contact.

“Yeah, an eagle right?” Sebastian replies casually.

“Falcon,” the guy states.

“I was more inclined to think Vulture,” Madd finishes our security check.

Every single case, big or small, has a security sequence that needs to be utilized when doing handoff. It ensures that the incoming personnel are who they say they are, and that the outgoing personnel were properly briefed. It’s a weird as fuck system but it has saved lives.

Can you imagine thinking your replacement has shown up and suddenly your charge is dead because you let one of their threats in? That would be a goddamn mess.

A smile finally breaks over the guy's face, causing his entire demeanor to soften as he steps forward with an outstretched hand, “I’m Dave, Lucas is inside with Aiden and Dakota.”

“Nice to meet you, I’m Wolf,” I greet, taking his hand and giving it a firm shake, “This is Maddox and Sebastian.”

He nods and shakes their hands, “I’ve heard a lot about you guys.”

Seb shrugs, a smug grin on his face, “All good, I hope.”

The guy smirks at him and returns his shrug, “Ya’ll wanna head inside and meet everyone?”

We all nod and follow him inside. I’m damn near speechless when I catch a look at the beauty of an interior. If I thought the outside was nice, it's barely scratching the surface on the inside. Tall vaulted natural wood ceilings, a warm fireplace that is heating the entire space, and modern but cozy furniture. It's honestly the nicest place I have ever stayed.

A gruff-looking bastard walks around the corner, a frown on his face as he takes us in. He doesn’t greet us, just looks at Dave and asks, “You check?”

Dave rolls his eyes and nods, “Yeah, fucker. Of course, I did.”

Grumpy, who must be Lucas, turns back to us and nods his head, “Nice to meet you guys. Hope the drive wasn’t too bad.”

“It was fine,” Maddox replies deadpan. He’s our resident broody bastard.

I almost burst out laughing at how similar their tones are. Both of them are grumpy shits. If this wasn’t our first time meeting I might make a joke about it. But I doubt it would go over well. Lucas seems to be an uptight kind of guy and Maddox is clearly feeling the tension.

Thumping footfalls come from behind Lucas and I watch as his face completely transforms as he takes in the kid that just ran to his side. From grumpy and annoyed to pure joy as he takes in the lanky dark-haired boy. He’s taller than I expected - the file has him at nine years old but he’s tall enough to pass for a teenager. God his parents must be super tall. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of the height associated with Dakota but she has to be pretty tall right? The kid is damn near 5’9 at nine years old.

“Lu, I think we should go for a hi-,” his words are cut off when his eyes find us standing near the door. He takes a nervous step back, only stopping when Lucas drags him to his side and throws an arm around his shoulders.

“Aid, these guys are your new guards,” he says softly, looking down at the boy with open affection.
