“It’s a great place for the office attire you need but also has the styles that you’ll love. It’s one of my favorite places to splurge,” Lana answers. I nod my head and watch the passing scenes from my window.

When we arrive, we pay the driver and step out onto the busy streets of New York City. Even with the rain, people are packed on the sidewalks. Lana grabs my hand as we dart through the cluster of people.

Once we’re inside, I feel like I need to shake like a dog to get all the rain off me. I’m sure we look like a bunch of drowned rats. One of the saleswomen turns her nose up at us but the other comes over and offers us her help.

“What can I help you ladies with?” she inquires as she looks from Lana to me.

“I need a new wardrobe for a job that starts tomorrow. I waited until the last minute, so any help is appreciated,” I explain. I hate having the attention on me, especially when I feel like I don’t belong.

“That’s not a problem. My name is Samantha, by the way. What type of clothes are you needing?” she questions.

“Well, I need office attire but without losing my personality. I don’t want stuffy, boring clothes,” I respond.

“You came to the right place. Let me take your coats and you can start looking around,” she says with a smile.

The next few hours fly by as we both try on tons and tons of different outfits. Most of everything I tried on, I loved. My credit card won’t love it, but I suredo. Once we leave, Lana persuades me to go next door for more shoes. I can’t lie, I’m intrigued to see all the high-end shoes. My eyes immediately fall on a pair of delectably glossy black patent leather Louboutin’s with their iconic red sole. My mouth waters at the sight. I know I shouldn’t get these, but I’ll be damned if I can turn away now that I set my sights on them. Up until today I have been very conservative with my savings, but I think it’s time for me to have a bit of fun.

“Are you seriously going to get those?” Lana questions as she points to the box in my hands. I look at her with a guilty grin, and she laughs.

“I’m pretty sure Ineedthem,” I exaggerate.

“Yeah, yeah,” she mutters in response.

“You’re the one that insisted we come in here. I would have been happy at a Converse store,” I tell her, chuckling to myself. “I think I have everything I need for tomorrow. Want to grab some dinner to take home? My hand is starting to throb a bit, so I won’t be able to carry all these bags around.”

“Sure. What are you in the mood for?” Lana asks, as we make our way to the cash register.

“Pizza or Mexican sounds good,” I reply. I set the box of shoes down next to the saleswoman at the register.Man, if looks could kill. Why the hell is she looking at me like I offended her.

“Ma’am,” she hisses, “are you sure you meant to grabthispair of shoes? There is a clearance section I’m sure would be more to your liking.”Oh, hell no she didn’t.

“Actually, these are perfect for me. And you know what? Do they come in another color? I would love a second pair,” I seethe as the woman gasps.

“S-sure. They also come in beige. I’ll go get them,”she stutters, then struts off to grab the other pair of shoes.

“I can’t believe she just said that to you,” Lana comments.

“Yeah, well she did and sucks for her, but she won’t be getting this commission either. I’m going to ask for another associate to check us out. I don’t put up with shitty people anymore,” I say just as the awful woman comes back holding the second pair of shoes.

“Here you go. These are the beige ones. Would you like these as well?” she asks.

“As a matter of fact, I would love them. But before you ring me up, I would like a different associate to help us. You understand, right? I’m sure there is someone you can help in the clearance section,” I gesture toward the far corner of the store.

“I apologize. Of course, let me get someone for you.” The woman walks away and I hope I never have to see her again. I hate it when people think they are better than other people. I won’t ever come to this store again.

“You are my new hero,” Lana states. “Too bad we don’t wear the same size shoes.” She smiles and quirks a brow at my boxes.

Once the new associate checks us out, Lana and I leave the store. We get a cab relatively quickly and pile our millions of bags into the trunk. I don’t know how we are going to get all this and dinner up to our apartment, but it’s safe to say that I think I’ve had my exercise for the day with all the walking we’ve done. We decide to have pizza delivered, so we head straight home. The cab driver drops us off on the curb of our apartment and helps us get the bags out of the trunk. When we get into the apartment, Lana and I collapse onthe couch in a fit of giggles. I don’t remember the last time I felt this light. I hope it means things are turning around for me.

Chapter 7

Sebastian

Elijah brings me my knew phone after setting it up for me. I needed an upgrade anyway. I suppose I could have gone about it better than throwing it into the river, but such is life. When I turn on the device, I see several missed calls and messages from Miles, those are the only ones I’m paying attention to. I open the messenger app and begin reading.

Miles:How was the fundraiser?

Miles:Heard from Marcy. Call me.
