“They have completed a sweep of the property and are already in place, sir,” he answers back.

“Excellent. I’ll leave you to it then,” I reply as I disconnect the call.

I set my phone down next to my drink, swapping it for my glass. Taking a large sip, I swirl the amber liquid around my mouth before it runs down my throat. I can’t wait to get this night over with, Miles owes me big-time. Setting my drink down, I finish getting dressed. I can’t help but think tonight something is going to happen. Not sure if it’s going to be good or bad but something. I’m sure of it.

Fuck me, I hate these things.

Chapter 4

Stormy

A knock comes from my door. “Are you finished getting dressed?” Lana questions. I take a look at my appearance in my floor length mirror, the crisp white shirt and black slacks looks foreign to me. Not to mention the black tie that I am sporting makes me feel like I am dressing up for Halloween as Michael Jackson or something. Maybe I should breakout in the“Thriller”dance right here.

“Yeah, I’m done. You can come in,” I respond to Lana. She walks in wearing the same uniform. It’s an odd look on her, especially since it isn’t full of colors and paint splatters. I chuckle at the sight. At least she still has her crazy hair that allows her personality to peek through.

“It fits great. I know it’s ugly but it’s only for a couple hours,” she says.

“It’s fine. Just not used to wearing something so formal. Not a big deal. Can I put my hair in a ponytail?” I ask because I would really hate to have to put it in a nice bun. Then I’d feel like a mix between a butler and a lunch lady. I cringe at the thought.

“A ponytail is fine. I have to clip mine back since it’s not long enough to fit into a rubber band.” She comes over to the mirror and fixes her makeup while I brushmy long hair into a ponytail. Evenin a ponytail it's still long enough to fall over my shoulder, they might make me put it in a bun after all.

“I’m a little nervous,” I admit. That’s not something I would usually tell anyone, but I feel like Lana and I have reached a level in our relationship where I can tell her things like that and I won’t be judged.

“I was too with my first event, but it went fine. And I’ll be right there with you if you have any questions.” Lana steps back from the mirror and squeezes my shoulder.

“You’re right. I’ve got this. Thanks again for getting me this gig. I don’t want to live on my savings,” I say as I spray some of my fly aways down.

“Girl, stop thanking me. It wasn’t a problem at all. I was happy to help. Plus, it’ll make work more fun. Sometimes I’m bored to death,” Lana remarks with a cringe.

“Okay, I think I’m ready,” I state as I giggle at her.

“Awesome. Grab an extra pair of clothes, so we can go out afterwards. I promise we’ll need it,” she announces as she walks out of my room. Quickly, I grab another set of clothes and my Chuck’s, stuffing everything into an overnight bag. Taking one last look in the mirror, I decide this is the best it’s going to get, and I head out too.

???

As our Uber drops us at the venue I have to take some deep breaths. I don’t know why I’m so nervous. It’s probably being thrust into a large, packed setting that has me on edge. I used to like crowds and I wanted to be the center of attention, but not anymore. I hope I get to be more of a wallflower tonight and that nothing brings any attention to me. This is only my third night in the city, and I don’t want anyone else finding out who I really am.

?“Girl, are you okay? I was talking to you,” Lana asks as she moves in front of me, looking into my eyes.

“Yeah, sorry. Must have zoned out there for a minute,” I smile nervously as I reply.

“It’s going to be fine. Gina is going to love you. Let’s go get our orders for the night.” Lana pulls me along beside her as we enter the catering tent. She walks us toward a large woman who looks to be in her early fifties with short black hair. I only see the back of her because she’s scolding two other waiters for something. Her tone makes me think we won’t get along like Lana believes. I might not be at this job for a while like I was planning. I have a penchant for talking back, since I was told what to do most of my life. I grew my own voice after Blaine died.

“Gina, this is Stormy, the girl I was telling you about.” Lana gets Gina’s attention after she finishes with the other servers. “Stormy, this is Gina, she’s been my boss for a year now.”

“Nice to meet you, ma’am. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.” I hold out my hand for her to shake but she dismisses me.

“Yeah, yeah. Just get your orders and don’t fuck anything up. This is a big event, and the company we are working for is one of the largest in the city.” Gina shuffles away as I stand there in shock with my hand still outstretched for her to shake.

“Wow. She isn’t normally like that, I swear. She must just be stressed out right now. I know this is a big night for the company. We got an email about it. It’s a big publishing company that’s hosting authors and investors tonight. Anyway, I’m sorry about her,” Lana remarks.

“No worries. I’ve been around people like her. I’m going to stay out of her line of fire though,” I reply.

“That’s probably a good idea,” she comments. “Let’s go get our orders, so we can get ready for the night.”

Lana leads me over to another person with a clipboard who apparently made the list on where everyone will be placed tonight. There’s a detailed drawing of the floor inside the venue. Lana’s and my section are close to each other. We get our aprons on and start pouring the champagne into these beautiful crystal flutes. Once they’re full, it’s our time to leave the tent and serve the attendees. I take a deep breath and lift the tray.I can do this.

The servers are in a line as we walk into the venue, but we veer off to our respective positions once we get inside. I can’t help but ogle all the beautiful people around me. These gowns are to die for, I wish I could trade places with one of these women. Even though our band signed with a record label, we never attended a party like this. I think there were some scheduled but then everything fell apart and here I am serving these people instead of being one of them.
