Once I get to our apartment, I pull out my overnight bag and walk inside. I’m holding my phone in my hand, not paying attention to my surroundings as I walk up to the door. I topple over a man that is on his knees inspecting our locks. Terror runs through me that this could be one of Jacob’s friends come and finish the job from last night.

I scream and reach into my purse clutching the first thing that I find. “Stop! I have pepper spray. Don’t come any closer!” I shout with my eyes closed tight.

A deep masculine laugh booms from the man lying beside me. I crack open one eye and see the most handsomeman I have ever seen laughing at me.

“I’m not kidding. I will spray!” I shout, louder than what’s needed for this tiny hallway.

“I don’t think that will do much damage.” He laughs again and my irritation grows until I see the object I’m threatening him with. A fucking tube of lipstick is what I have in my hand. I cover my face with my other hand as the embarrassment grows. I know my cheeks are flaming red at this point.

Embarrassment is quickly replaced with anger, “Who the hell are you? And what are you doing in front of my apartment?” I manage to say as I scootch away from the stranger.

“I’m Travis James, owner of Royal Elite Security. Miles called and wanted me to come by to check out your apartment and install some security features.” He gets up from where I pummeled him to the floor and offers me his hand. Tentatively, I slide my hand in his and he pulls me up from the floor.

“Thank you,” I murmur. Rearranging my dress and grabbing my bags, I set my eyes back on Travis. He’s very tall and muscular. His light brown hair is cut short and very neat as though he were in the military at some point. And his dimples are like beacons to my very soul. His chestnut eyes are watching me check him out and I can feel my cheeks flame with embarrassment for the second time in five minutes.

“Miles mentioned that someone would be by. I got caught up with work and suppose I forgot. I’m sorry for running you over. I didn’t hurt you did I?” I find myself checking him out more under the guise that I’m looking forinjuries.

“No, worries. I’m fine. You must be Sarah.” He holds out his hand for me to shake.

“Yes, sorry. Where are my manners? I’m Sarah,” I say as I shake his hand.

“Nice to meet you. Sorry for the confusion earlier.” He motions to the floor. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

A giggle erupts from me. “I’m sorry I threatened to pepper spray you with my lipstick.” I palm my forehead and shrug my shoulders.

“I have to say that was a first for me.” He chuckles to himself. “Anyways, Miles wanted to make sure you and his girlfriend are safe in this building. He said there was some kind of an incident last night. It’s gotten him in an over protective mode.”

“To be honest, he’s always in a protective mode with Lizzie. That’s one of the things I appreciate about him.” Searching for my keys, I unlock the door. “Would you like to come inside so we can talk about this? It’s better than the hallway.” I motion.

“That works. Whatever makes you more comfortable. I don’t want to intrude,” Travis remarks. I take that as a yes and open the door, holding it so he can follow me in. I put my things down and lead Travis to the kitchen.

“Can I get you anything to drink?” I ask, grabbing myself a water bottle from the refrigerator.

“Actually, water would be great. Thank you.” I slide a bottle over to him and open mine.

“So, what is it that Miles is wanting done? Lizzie is barely here anymore,” I growl slightly, showing myfrustration with the situation.

“Yeah, he did mention that she’s always with him, but I believe he wants you safe as well.” Travis opens his water and takes a sip. I roll my eyes at Miles. He thinks he can throw his money around and get whatever he wants. Well, I don’t need a security system. Lizzie and I have been living here for years and we’ve never had a problem.

“Travis, I’m sorry that you had to come out here, but I think I’ll be fine. I’ve never had any trouble before. I just don’t think that some boy on a power trip justifies me needing security,” I tell him trying not to be a bitch but also not caring how it comes out if it gets him to leave. I want to continue on with my independence.

“With all due respect, you shouldn’t take threats lightly,” he says with a huff.

“I’m not in the business of cowering to people,” I remark.

“Well, I’m in the business of keeping people alive and that’s something your friend almost wasn’t last night.” I gulp loudly as I swallow my water down. I didn’t think he was going to punch below the belt.

“You don’t play very fair, Travis, but I understand where you’re coming from. So, what all are you going to do to my apartment?” I question. I hope my home doesn’t end up like one big boobytrap for me to stumble into.

Chapter 3

Travis

Sarah asked me a question, but I can’t take my eyes off her long enough to answer. Her short blonde hair falls into her face every so often and she wipes it away, focusing her radiant green eyes on me. I want to take a bite out of her pale, milky flesh as I take her from behind.Fuck, where did that come from?I’ve never had such a visceral reaction to such an irritating woman in my life. I try to concentrate on what she asked me.

“I didn’t come here to play fair, Sarah. I came here to do a job. One that I intend to see through. I want you to be safe.” It surprises me how much that’s true. I want this woman protected and I want to be the man that does it. She sucks in a breath at my admission, but I don’t let her think about it long before I continue. “There are various different cameras that can be installed outside of your door. But first, I’m going to set up a keyless entry. That way people who don’t have the code can’t come through. I’ll also put sensors on your windowsills that will sound an alarm if they’re opened.” I make some notes on my phone planning all the equipment that I’ll be needing.

“Wow, that sounds like a lot of trouble to go through for Miles’ girlfriend’s friend. Are you sure he wanted all this?” Sarah asks.
