“It’s exactly what he asked for. I am the best security company in the state, just let me do my job,” I retort. I want her to submit and do as she’s told, not keep asking all these questions.

“As you wish, your majesty. I’ll be in my room if you need anything. I have to run some errands so if you could hurry up that would be great,” she huffs as she leaves the kitchen. Sarah doesn’t like being told what to do. That much is clear. I watch her glorious ass shake back and forth as she storms away, slamming her door behind her. She shouldn’t have left a complete stranger alone in her apartment. This girl doesn’t know the first thing about safety, something she clearly needs a lesson in.

I take a moment to look around the apartment. It’s very clean and tidy. She has a Christmas tree up in the corner of the living room and everything on the tree matches the aesthetic of the apartment. Of course it is with the stick Sarah has lodged up her ass. She needs something else stuck in there.Fuck, why can’t I stop thinking about her like that. She’s a pain in my ass already and I haven’t even started working yet. She’s going to get a bag of coal for Christmas. I take note of the number of windows that I can see. I’ll add extra sensors to my list for the windows I can’t see. I check to see if everything I need is on the list, then I head for the door making sure to lock it as I leave. I’ll have Miles give Sarah my contact information in case she needs something before I see her again.

I make my way down to my truck thinking about the infuriating blonde vixen upstairs. There was something about her that struck a chord with me. I try to put her in the back of my mind as I make my way through the city.

I walk into my office, which has been transformedinto a fucking Winter Wonderland while I was away. There is garland with lights, red and green decorations at every turn, and at the very center a huge Christmas tree adorned with more baubles than you could imagine. Loud holiday tunes stream through the speakers.

“Surprise, bossman!” My team jumps out with smiles on their faces. I have to admit, I never thought to decorate this place. Normally I don’t decorate anything, not even my home. It’s not that I don’t like the holiday, I do. It’s having been in the Army for so long, this time of year feels like any other. We didn’t get a chance to celebrate it much, especially if we were on mission. And that became the case for many years.

“Damn, guys. How the hell did you get this done so quickly?” I ask as I walk around seeing new decorations on every corner. I don’t want to know how much they spent on this. I’m sure it was charged to the company. Not that it matters, we are a billion-dollar company, but I don’t see the point in reckless spending on things that aren’t necessary.

Damien speaks up first. “We got to work as soon as you left. We knew you would enjoy it, Tank.” This was a nickname given to me down range because I’m a fucking tank. My friends call me Tank, but my unit called me Top. I enlisted in the Army because I wanted to be boots on the ground. I achieved the rank of Master Sergent during Operation Enduring Freedom. Being down range really brought us together. We fuck with each other any chance we get.

“It looks like Christmas threw up in here,” I mention as I walk around.

“Good. Mission accomplished, bitch,” The men in mysquad say in unison.

“Who’s ass do I need to stomp because of this shit?” The gang starts pointing fingers and just like I suspected it was Ghost. Jack, the Ghost, joined our ragtag team of misfits a few years ago.

“Sleep with your eyes open, Ghost,” I mutter as I walk up to my office. I hear them all laughing and high fiving as I leave the room. At least they left my office space somewhat neutral, except for the wreath on my door.

I sit down at my desk and start typing up the list of items I need for Sarah’s and Lizzie’s apartment. I have everything I need to go ahead and install the keyless entry, but I’ll have to order some of the other supplies needed. Deciding to update Miles, I pick up my phone and call him.

“How’s it going, man?” Miles questions when he answers the phone.

“Not bad. I went by the girls’ apartment. Sarah is something else, isn’t she?” I inquire.

“Well, she’s a very independent woman. I knew she was going to push back with this security system. I guess I should’ve mentioned that beforehand.” Miles let’s out a laugh.

“A little heads up would have been nice. She tried to pepper spray me, man.” We both laugh. I think back to the look on her face when she realized she was holding lipstick instead of a weapon. She needs some lessons in self-defense. What if I had been a thief or something? She definitely wouldn’t have been prepared.

“Damn, she’s a firecracker. Maybe you could tame her. She’s single, you know?”

“Yeah, when hell freezes over, man. She’s like a literal ice queen.” I wince thinking of what she would do hearing me say that.

“She isn’t that bad. You must have caught her on a bad day. Anyways, what about the apartment?” he asks.

“I made a list of everything I need. Some I already have. Everything else will need to be ordered. I decided to install a keyless entry for them. They are safer and can’t be easily broken into. I’ll write everything up and send it over to you.”

“Thanks for doing this. It means a lot,” he says.

“It wasn’t a problem. I’m happy to do it. Also, can you give me Sarah’s contact info so the next time I stop by I can warn her?” I ask with a chuckle.

“Sure, I’ll text it to you. Look, Elijah just came in here to remind me of an appointment in ten minutes. I’ll talk to you later.” Miles hangs up.

I send over the email with everything I want to do with the girls’ apartment and he replies back with Sarah’s contact information. If I send off a text to Sarah now, she can plan for me to come tomorrow. I might wait to send it in the morning, so she has to make time for me. A laugh bubbles up from my chest.I put my phone aside instead of sending her a text. I wonder what she is doing right now. She drives me crazy, but I still can’t help but to find her intriguing.

Chapter 4

12 days til Christmas…

Sarah

I scoff as I look down at the text that came through from Travis this morning. He must automatically think I don’t have plans today. Albeit I don’t, but still. He doesn’t need to know that. I drum my phone against my hand trying to come up with a response. I finally give up and text him about shopping.

Sarah:I will be in and out all day today. Christmas shopping and all.
