He smiled at Taylor and nodded. "Taylor, nice to see you again."

Taylor glanced from one to the other with a wide smile. "Samesies. Here, let me take that."

Taylor took her wheeled bag and wrestled it into the trunk. Lucy looked up at Mason.

He reached up and held her chin between his finger and thumb. He leaned in softly and kissed her. It was a goodbye kiss that broke her heart. Then his kiss turned savage, and he crushed their bodies together.

He deepened the kiss, twirling his tongue with hers until she gasped. His mouth was merciless and hungry. Her body ached for him.

He wrenched himself away, backing up two steps. They both panted heavily, then he took a deep breath and turned without a backward glance. He walked back down the sidewalk, then crossed the street to the parking garage.

Lucy lost sight of him. Only then did she turn back to Taylor's car and open the passenger door. She closed it and buckled up as Taylor pulled away from the curb.

"Damn girl, that was some kiss. No wonder you fell in love with him. Don't blame you at all," Taylor chuckled.

Lucy sniffed and turned to face the window. "Not now, Tay. Can we talk about something else? It's too raw."

Taylor tapped her manicured fingers against the steering wheel and bobbed her head. "Absolutely. So remember that professor from the class I dropped?"

She launched into a sordid story, but Lucy only half listened as tears streamed down her cheeks. Soon she had cried herself to sleep.

LUCY SETTLED BACK INTO her new life in Crimson Creek with ease. She went back to work after the weekend, and everyone wanted to see all her pictures and hear all about her trip.

The problem was that a lot of her pictures involved Mason. She didn't want to talk about him or mention him. Not with small town gossips still getting to know her as the new girl in town.

After a week, she spent the night moving all the pictures with Mason into a special folder on her phone. It hurt too much to look at him, and she'd spent every night eating dinner alone and crying over his pictures.

She was cleaning up at the salon after a hectic few days of trying to get everyone's nails done before Spring Break when her cell phone rang.

Without looking, she answered it. "Hello?"

"Lucy?"

Her heart skipped a beat, and she dropped the broom. "Mason?" she gasped.

He cleared his throat and said, "Yeah, it's me. How are you doing?"

She picked up the broom and looked around wildly. The ladies still in the chair were staring at her.

She smiled at Katie, her boss, and said, "I'm going to take a break. I'll be right back."

Katie nodded, her brows arched as Lucy stepped outside and walked down the sidewalk. She knew Katie would ask for all the details when she got back, but she couldn't worry about that now.

"Fine. I'm fine. How are you?"

She stared at her hand, still holding the broom. Silently, she cursed herself and stomped back toward the salon, propping the broom up beside the door and continuing down the sidewalk.

"Good actually. I—I wanted to check in on you, make sure you're doing good."

"Yeah, I'm good."

He sighed, "That's good then."

There was a pause, then he chuckled, the sound sending a shiver up her spine. "Ok, this is awkward."

"Slightly. Is that the only reason you called?" she asked breathlessly, her breath pausing as she waited for his answer.

There was a pause on the other end, then he said, "No, it's not."
