Dashel runs a hand through his hair. “Uh, sorry. Not happening, short stuff.”

Stevie grabs my hand, and before anyone says another word, she blinks us out.

“Oh, he’s gonna be pissed. And when did you learn to blink?”

“I didn’t blink, I portaled and I’ve been practicing for just that reason.”

“Impressive.” I pause, taking in the room. “Is this your room?”

Stevie doesn’t have to acknowledge it. I can tell it’s an Omega’s room by the sheer number of pillows on the bed and piled in the corner to form a cozy nest.

The wolves on Celestus aren’t quite the same as the mortal realm shifters, but nests are ubiquitous. But now that I think about it, maybe that’s why I took to Stevie so easily.

The wolf packs were never unkind to me. They never judged my outbursts. We weren’t friends by any stretch. The daughter of the monarch in charge of your right to hunt and shift could never be more than a careful ally.

But the kindness they showed me, whether it was ultimately to their benefit or not, likely influenced my opinion of Stevie.

She gestures to the made bed. Lilac linens and blush-colored pillows are piled high enough to be comical. “First things first,” she says, sitting next to me. “I got a hold of Sera and filled her in.”

“You did!” A rush of relief floods me, and the ball of knotted muscles at the base of my wings finally loosens.

Stevie nods. “You were right. She was very worried but glad you found a way to contact her. She suggests using me as a permanent go-between to keep her updated.”

“I—that’s…” That’s complicated. How am I supposed to keep Sera updated if I can’t tell Stevie anything?

Stevie nods. “She thought you might take issue with that. She told me to tell you, and I quote 'to get your head out of your godsdamn ass and recognize an ally when you see one,” end quote.”

I stare at her.

Stevie just shrugs. “That’s what she said. At this point, I don’t really care if you let me in on your secret plan. I just need to know you’re safe and that those god-awful heirs aren’t hurting you.”

I take her hand in mine, locking eyes with her. “I am safe. The heirs are not hurting me.”

She searches my face.

“I swear I’m being truthful. They aren’t hurting me.”

Stevie sighs, expression pulling down. “But would you know if they were?”

I take a breath, frustrated that she didn’t believe me, but also understanding why she wouldn’t.

Given the backstory I fed her, I’d think the same.

“Look, there’s only one way to clear this up,” I start. “I didn’t escape an oppressive religious cult. Well, sort of. I kind of did, but that’s not really the point.”

Stevie’s brows pull together. “Are you having one of your word vomit things again?”

Am I?

“No. This is all me. The cult was a cover story.” I spin my glamour ring around my finger absently before it draws my attention. It would be the fastest…

“I’m not a demon, Stevie.” I pull off the ring and sigh as the magic flows off me.

I’ve never seen Stevie’s face go so pale, eyes so round with…

“Hey, hey. Don’t be afraid. It’s still me, I’m just…”

“Holy shit you’re an…”
