“In first year, you learned to visualize your magic. Second year, you’re supposed to hone using it. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do today.”

“Everyone spread out!” Ms. Greenly calls with a wide smile. “No, come on, farther than that. Give each other some space. Trust me, you’re gonna need it.”

When we’ve spread out so there’s several feet between us, Ms. Greenly begins.

“When I think of my magic, it has a certain texture, a color and weight to it. It’s something I can feel in my body. Now, thatwasn’t always the case for me, and if it’s not for you, that’s not a problem. But that’s what we’re working toward.”

My native power has always felt light and spacious. Like floating. Calling on it when I’m heavy-hearted always makes me feel better, even if I don’t use it.

I haven’t been able to do that since I’ve been here, and it took Ms. Greenly pointing it out for me to realize how much I miss it.

By contrast, the demon magic feels awful. Jagged and stiff, it’s like trying to channel hot broken glass through my body.

It wasn’t so hard on Celestus. Sera and I would have never moved on with the plan if I couldn’t wield the demon magic stored and safe in rings at the bottom of my bag.

I wish I could talk to her about it.

I glance over at Stevie, who’s looking at me.

Staring, more like it, with a strained expression. Her eyes widen, brows lift, like she’s trying to say something without words. I shake my head, unable to parse her expression.

Her shoulders sag, mouth pulls into a grimace.

Maybe Stevie got in touch with Sera over the weekend. I’ll have to make sure I talk to her after class.

“If you’re one of those who doesn’t naturally feel your magic right now, just assign it properties. Give it a color, a texture. Don’t get caught up in being too literal. This is just a way to help you visualize and control your power better.”

Well, guess I better at least pretend to do what she’s asking.

“Once you’re solid with whatever you’ve decided your power feels and looks like, I want you to imagine stretching it. As far as it will go.”

Ms. Greenly pauses, waiting for us to do as she asked.

I imagine stretching the shards of glass without accessing any magic.

“If you imagined stretching your magic, and it grew thinner, or transparent, that’s your own self-limiting beliefs. Don’tbelieve it. You just experienced for yourself a single witch portal all of you and your junk out here. The only limits to what you can do are what you put on yourselves.”

After class, and before Dashel can blink me out, Stevie blinks herself next to me. When the hell did she learn that?

“Hey! HEY!” Dashel’s running toward us, murder in his eyes before I can say anything. “Back off!”

Stevie rolls her eyes at me before turning around to meet Dash head on.

The girl’s got gall. I’m not sure I could have done the same if I were her.

“No, you back off! A good bodyguard knows the difference between a friend and threat, dumbass.”

“HA!”

Stevie turns around, eyes bright with anger. “What are you laughing at? You’re just as bad for letting them keep you sequestered the last month like some?—”

“It’s for her own protection, Stevie. You fucking know that.”

She turns, rounding on Dashel again. “She needed her friends this weekend. Not some smelly boys in a dank lair, asshole.”

Dashel has nothing to say in return.

“Now give us a minute, would you?”
