Axe shrugs. “I dunno, Dove. Lots of reasons.”

“Speculate.”

He stares at me. “Is that what your deal is? My family has someone you care about?”

My heart thuds so loudly I know he can hear it. I keep forgetting how quick these demons are. They connect dots faster than I expect.

I stay silent.

“I’ll take that as a yes.” He lets his shoulders fall back on the bed. “There’s a multitude of reasons the Syndicate might hold someone. Anything from a protection order to failure to pay a debt or as punishment for treating one of our ladies poorly.”

My mind whirs, trying to make those reasons fit.

“Which was your friend’s vice? That’ll likely be what got him there.”

Vice?

Gael didn’t have any vices I was aware of.

“I... I’m not sure.”

“Well, think about it. Meanwhile, I can ask around. What’s your friend’s name?”

That’s the thing. I’m not certain what name Gael used here. My only guess would be the pseudonym he had when he rescued me. The hospital asked for his name and relationship to me. His name was all over my hospital chart.

“Gael DuCeil,” I whisper, trying not to let too much hope in my voice.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Little is known of the subspecies within the demon race. The Celestian Ethics and Prophetics board is hesitant to pursue the topic further, as such study would require close observation of the violent, unpredictable species.

- Demonic Charms and How to Avoid Them

Demonsof all sizes and every color of the rainbow walk by. Some carry bags, others have their noses buried in their phones or devices.

“Pay attention, Dove. What does this line mean?” Axe points to a passage of demon script in front of me. One of the hundreds of tomes shelved in his library lies open before me.

But I can’t concentrate on the stupid sigils.

Axe sighs, leaning back in his chair as the bank of windows once again pulls my gaze. “I see now it was a mistake to move your free period demon lessons to the solarium.”

I turn slowly to face him. “Why do some demons look more human, and some have colorful skin and horns?”

A curious expression pulls his features. “You really know nothing about your culture. Stevie said as much, and Jess mentioned something about a reclusive cult, but…”

“Keep looking at me like a bug under a microscope, and I’ll rearrange that lovely face of yours even more than the other heirs did the other day.”

His smile falls away, the yellowing bruise on this side of his face still just as prominent as when I first saw it.

Axe clears his throat and moves on. “There are all kinds of different demons, Dove. Some only have a human-like form. Some only have what’s called a true form—the horns and colors and tail. And some have both. You, though…” He leans forward and strokes the base of my left horn.

I jerk my head out of his grasp. “What the fuck, Axe!”

He smirks at me, and I do my best to ignore my now throbbing clit.

Apparently, Sera did averygood job with this glamour because these demon horns have a direct link to my libido.

“I’ve never seen a demon with permanent horns in a humanoid state.”
