Unfortunately, I don’t get to witness any of their responses because Chonk bursts into tentacles and pulls me into another portal.

We appear in my former dorm room.

Chonk hops up on the bed and seats himself on my pillow. “Why are you here?” he asks plainly.

I don’t hesitate. “To rescue my betrothed.” I don’t know why I say it, but I do. Me. Not my fried wires.

“And the heirs can help with that?”

I nod.

“Why are you pretending to be a demon instead of what you truly are?”

Now, that secret, I’m not so willing to let go of. “What I truly am?”

Chonk regards me with the same disappointed stare one might give a child for spilling their milk. “The heir to the highest Celestian host.”

My mouth falls open. This demon cat knows far more than I gave him credit for.

But he still doesn’t know why I need to protect my identity. He doesn’t know what angel magic is to demons and other magic users. If he did, he wouldn’t need to ask.

“Who else knows?”

Chonk scrunches his whole face at me. “No one! And I’m offended you’d even ask. Now, why are you masquerading as a demon?”

“Why does it matter?”

“I need to know what I’ve brought into my school, disguised-one.”

My brain steps in, and I throw caution out the window and let it. “Well, I need to make sure my wings stay intact, so I guess we’re at a loss. And you can’t tell anyone what you know. Not a soul, cat.”

“Obviously.” He holds my gaze for several moments without blinking or saying anything.

When the silence grows too uncomfortable to bear, I fill it. "Why did you call the heirs that? Homunculi? They’re literally some of the tallest guys I’ve ever seen.”

The cat’s expression changes. He’s no longer staring but taking my measure. Seeing if I’m worthy of the answer.

“The heirs have yet to earn their true forms. Until then, they are the smallest of their kind.”

True form.

True form? I hadn’t realized the heirs were more than the humanoid type of demon.

I decide to see what else the cat might tell me. “I’m not familiar. Can you enlighten me?”

“I can.”

When he fails to continue, I motion for him to do so.

“I can. But I will not.” More staring. “Stay with the heirs, Celestian. They will keep you safe.”

“Well, you were the one who portaled me away from them, so…”

“A detail I will correct as soon as you’ve answered my final question.”

I nod. “Go on.”

“How long do you expect your rescue mission will take? It’s become quite taxing on the headmaster and the Lords of Blackwood to continue deflecting your father’s attempts at an incursion on Blackwood U.”
