I shake my head and let out a frustrated growl. “Well, did any of you get true forms this time?” I ask, trying to change the subject.

Another uncomfortably long silence.

“We didn’t,” Enzo finally says.

“Can you at least tell me if Axe disappearing and coming back with bruises has to do with finding my friend?”

Another long look between the three heirs.

“Quit talking with your godsdamn expressions and just tell me.”

“They’re tangentially connected, you might say.” Bastian sighs. “And that’s all I’m saying.”

“Yeah, Dove. We can’t say any more. But why don’t you tell us about this Gael person you and Malachi were talking about? Is he your mate, too?”

My chest tightens. Something about his name in Enzo’s mouth…

It’s not right.

“I don’t want to talk about him.”

“Well, I think if you were to start talking about him, you might be able to connect some dots that we can’t and won’t confirm or deny are dots at all.” The smile in his gaze is genuine, even if Enzo’s eyes are particularly pinned and static today.

I nod. They can’t tell me outright, but like all things in the demon realms, we can talk around it.

“Gael is my soul-bond. We’re meant to be mates and complete one another’s power.”

“I told you,” Bash says to Dash.

“Told him what?”

“If you have another mate out there,” Enzo says, “then none of us are getting a true form until we bring him in, and you’re definitely not out ofustruesyet.”

I spend the day in the solarium trying to wrap my head around the possibility of maybe having my cake and eating it too.

My father’s gone, no longer a threat.

The heirs are now far more eager to find Gael.

And if he agrees…

If he can accept this part of me, and he might. For me, he might.

But I don’t want to think about it too much. I’m not in the habit of casting my fortune before I’ve seen the cards.

A lot of things must happen for this to end optimally.

That evening, pressed into my favorite place, both Dash and Bash suddenly tense.

“What? What’s wrong?” I ask. Their bodies are still hard and ready for action and not in the fun way.

“Axe is on his way back,” Dashel says.

To him, Bastian asks, “Do you think he got?—”

“I think he tried.”

“Honey, I’m home,” Axe’s voice calls from the living area. “And I brought a friend.”
