I’ve never hopped out of bed so fast.

It couldn’t be.

At the same time, I both hope Gael’s here and hope Axe didn’t bring him back at all.

Because if he did, then it’s either an enormous coincidence, or Axe decided it suited his needs more than he expected.

And I don’t believe in coincidences.

But when I run to down the hall to the living space, all I see is Axe.

“Who—who did you bring?”

He steps to the side.

Gael.

I’m frozen in place, unable to speak. All I can do is stare at his beautiful face. The eyes blue as the sky, jaw squared and rugged, the lips he used to pleasure and comfort and love me.

“Sha-ræ.” His warm, soft voice carries the pet name on the air like floating silk, wrapping around me like it always does, and I fall into his arms with a sob.

He smells the same, like rain and fresh air, and I gulp him down like it’s the last time I’ll ever scent him again.

“I’ll let you two catch up,” Axe says and walks off.

I don’t care, though. I don’t care about anything except the feeling of my Gael in my arms again.

“I thought you were dead,” I finally whisper into his chest.

“I almost was,” he says against my head.

“What happened? Where were you?”

Gael strokes my back, long, light touches where my wings meet my back. The way he always does.

“It’s a very long story, Dove. One that doesn’t paint me in the best light, I’m afraid.”

“Well, I killed Malachi and fucked four demons to get you back, so who am I to judge?”

I pull out of his grasp, horrified I let my brain say that.

But Gael doesn’t look shocked or incensed. He doesn’t even seem surprised.

“Axe saw fit to get me up to speed on the situation. I know what you did and why you did it. And I know that fucking them wasn’t wholly your choice.Ustruesforced the situation.”

Have, meet cake.

“Are you serious?”

He nods, that sandy hair falling in his clear, beautiful eyes.

I smile at him and grab his face for a kiss.

But he backs away, looking downward. “Before you thank me for understanding your situation, I need to tell you about mine.” He leads us to the sofa, and as much as everything about him is the same physically, he’s different.

Closed off. My knees point toward him but his point straight ahead. He even has an arm crossed over his body, blocking mefrom him, while the one farther from me lines the back of the sofa.

Gael is either incredibly nervous about what he has to tell me, or his feelings toward me have changed.
