“Certainly,” he says, far too smugly as he leans over and flicks through my apps.

I glare at him, or rather, at his lips as a matching smirk curves mine.

That familiar itch descends.

I decide not to hold back.

A monumentally reckless move, considering I have no control over what my brain shares. I could very well be about to tell him how magnificently gorgeous I think he is, or that I’m only here to get my soul-bonded.

Or that I’m not at all what I’m pretending to be.

“Hey, shit dick, she said show, not touch.”

Not bad, brain. Not bad.

The class had been quiet. Now it’s utterly still.

No one even seems to breathe.

Axe removes his hand from my tablet, only to press a finger under my chin, forcing my head up. Forcing me to meet his eyes.

A ghost of a smile traces his lips.

“That’s twice you’ve publicly disrespected me, Dove. There won’t be a third.”

I lift a brow at him, staring into those star-flecked eyes. “Unless you plan on removing my tongue, you have little say in the matter.”

I’m 73.2% sure that was all me.

“I told you it would be fun,” Chonk, with his strange other-planar voice, says to someone, somewhere. I don’t know who, and I don’t much care. Not as long as this demon keeps looking at me like that.

His smirk shifts into a gorgeous, twisted thing. A cruel smile, if ever there was one. “Practicum App. Chapter 3. Second paragraph.”

He tears his gaze from mine and stares straight ahead, and I can’t help feeling like he’s torn something integral, something I can’t live without, away from me.

“As I stated on the first day of class, I don’t think anyone, least of all my second-years, are best served by learning magic through a textbook. Today, I’d intended to begin with hands-on learning, but since Ms. Collins is just joining us, I think a class wide refresher is in order.”

The whole class groans at the announcement.

Oh, wonderful. Just what I need, more negative attention. “Please don’t make any accommodations solely for me. I’m a quick study. I’m sure I’ll catch up.”

Ms. Greenly levels her wide eyes on me and stalks closer. “Ms. Collins, I speak from experience when I say the last thing you want is getting your shit rocked with demon magic. We’ll take the day to refresh and continue as planned tomorrow.”

While I’m only slightly taken aback by the teacher’s use of profanity, it’s the suspicious glint in her eye that has me infinitely more concerned.

“Mr. Axwell, may I count on you to make sure our new student is up to speed by next class?”

My cheeks burn, and for the second time since getting here, I wish the Flames would spirit me away from this mess.

I dare a glance at the demon seated next to me. His jaw is so tight, a muscle twitches on the side of his face.

“It would be my pleasure,” he growls between gritted teeth.

“Good,” Ms. Greenly says, oblivious to both our discomfort.

The rest of the class period passes without incident or interest, and I try my best to look like a new student on her first day learning about something she’s never heard before.

When in truth, I’d mastered these techniques as a prepubescent.
