Several times, I caught my mind drifting. My eyes, too, kept drifting to the side of Axe’s face.

Celestus help me, how am I supposed to sit next to him and not explode? How dare he look so physically perfect yet be such an annoying little shit.

“Something to say to the class, Ms. Collins?”

I shake my head and glue my eyes to the tablet. I must have been muttering to myself.

That’s not a brain damage thing. That’s just a Dove thing.

The second the bell rings, I’m up and out the door before anyone can say another word to me.

My next class should be one floor up, and if I hurry, I can be the first one there and deal with all the new student stuff privately.

But I’m not so lucky.

The room has one other student.

The one Stevie, Jess, and Austin all warned me to stay away from.

Enzo Skinner, head of Envy House and heir to the vices in his realm’s mafia.

He looks up from his phone, and his eyes light up with…

I don’t know exactly what it is, but it makes alarm bells go off in my head.

There’s nothing about his appearance that’s intentionally intimidating. No tattoos. No bulk. In fact, he has a boyishly sweet face that even his shaved head can’t harden. And unlike the other house heads, he’s rather soft in the middle.

“Hello, pretty bird. I didn’t get a chance to introduce myself properly the other day.”

I ignore him, shaking my head to let my hair fall in a curtain around me, blocking him from my sight entirely as I stalk to the teacher’s desk. “Hi, I’m new. My name’s Dove and?—”

“We know who you are, Ms. Collins.” The teacher, Mr. Jarvis, a middle-aged bear of a man with a scar running the length of his neck and a strangely comforting smile, points to the desks. “The seat in front of Mr. Skinner is available. Please take it, and I’ll send you my lecture notes for the last month.” The teacher taps his tablet, and I sit in the seat he assigned. In front of an heir isn’t as bad as next to, right?

I pull out my tablet and suck in a breath. Another message blinks on the screen. Another message from Axe that makes dread and excitement fight to the death in my middle.

Troyan Axwell

You smelled divine in class, angelcakes. Hope you like your gift.

I smile despite the tense snake winding around me at the use of that particular pet name, and instead allow myself to sink into the blanket of warm tingles glowing in my chest.

But only for a moment.

What could Troyan Axwell get for the new demon girl he doesn’t know that would make him proud enough to send a toying text?

Unless…

What if Sera was wrong, and he does know, and my “gift” is nothing but a reminder that he knows?

More playing with his food.

I pull my bottom lip between my teeth.

I should ask him what it is.

No, better yet, I’ll leave the cocky demon on read. I dismiss the notification and smile to myself.

But that doesn’t keep my stomach from dancing around like it wants to celebrate or hurl and can’t decide which.
