He shakes his head. “Not this week. You talk to Lainey?”

“Yeah, I sent her a basket of pies. Her favorite is raspberry, and I had a bunch leftover. So…”

“Always thinking. How are things going with her dad?”

“The same. I’ll tell you over dinner tonight.”

His lips land on my head. “Sounds good. We should get you inside. I don’t want you getting sick. Your body is working overtime as it is.”

The kids run off into the side yard as Atlas helps me up into the warm truck and we drive toward our cabin.

“Oh, baby names. I was thinking something Alaskan, like Aurora?”

“Yes, little rabbit. I love that name, and I love you.” He kisses my lips gently and closes the door to the truck, rounding to the driver’s side door. I wasn’t expecting that to be so easy, but I’m glad it was. I want the kids to know the Alaskan frontier as well as they know Rugged Mountain because they’re both home. We’ve got a trip scheduled to see Atlas’ family in a few months.

Life is filled with funny little moments. You think you’re going in one direction, and you end up clear on the other side of the map. I thought I’d live out my days in a mold-ridden house on Main Street raising the kids alone. I thought I’d strip for money on the weekends and save forever for school. Instead, I’m on twenty-five acres next to a babbling creek with a barn, a chicken coop, a greenhouse, and a little farm stand. Plus, I’m married to the man of my dreams… even if he’s a great big, protective Doberman.
