Vance followedher into the apartment. It was a helluva lot bigger than he was expecting. A huge light blue L-shaped couch dominated the space. They had a decent entertainment set-up with a flat screen television mounted against the wall.

It was all open floorplan from kitchen to living room to a small bench and table set up in the corner. But man, she wasn’t kidding about the view. The apartment was a wall of windows. More industrial in style than his place, but it had a bird’s eye view of Kensington Square’s center square.

Lightning speared across the black sky followed by a menacing rumble of thunder. Okay, so it was worth the experience.

“Nat?”

“Office,” came a shout from the back.

She dumped her purse on a club chair and he did the same. She pulled him down the two stairs that created the sunk in living room. And around the corner to a hallway.

“It’s quite the place, Goldie.”

“We are definitely grandfathered in. I got this place back when the business was huge and thriving. But it’s rent controlled because I was smart enough to demand it.”

“Smart girl is right.”

This part of New York was always in flux. Kensington Square was coming into its own with every year. It was an odd mix of old and new. Same could be said for her apartment. Art Deco meets female. It suited her.

A willowy brunette came out of the hallway, her long hair up in the similar messy knot that was a trick only girls seemed to know. Huge black frames perched on the edge of her slim nose. She pushed them up and her mouth dropped open.

“Hi.”

“Nat, meet Vance. Vance, Natalie Boyd. The one that picked my blind date from hell.”

Vance cleared his throat. “I suppose it’s weird to thank you for doing that, but I do.” He held out his hand.

Natalie looked between Vance and Presley and then back to Presley. “You’re welcome?” She pushed her glasses on top of her head. “Wait. So, the date was a bust?”

“You’re lucky that I met Vance or I’d still be reaming you out about Daniel Perkins, Esquire of the law offices of boring and asshole.”

Natalie winced. “He seemed like a nice guy when he went to drinks with us.”

“Did he happen to have his phone out all night?”

Nat frowned. “Now that I think about it, I guess he did.”

“Yeah. He wasnota good choice.”

“So, how—did I miss something? When you texted that you weren’t going to be home yesterday, I assumed that meant it went well with…”

Vance folded his arms over his chest.

Natalie blinked. “So, it went well with Vance then?” Her attractive, if a little sharp-featured, face bloomed into a smile. “Way to go, Warren.” She looked him over. “Definitely an upgrade from Daniel.”

“Nice. No drooling over my…friend.”

Vance hauled Presley into his side. “Bit more than friends.”

She rolled her eyes. “So you’re off the hook because this was the guy next to me at the game. Much more charming.”

“I should hope so,” Vance muttered.

“Want coffee?”

Vance nodded.
