He’d bulldozed her right out of his life.

He blew out a breath as he dug his keys out of his jacket pocket. September evenings were finally getting a little chilly. Maybe some of that bracing air off the lake would help clear his head.

A pair of lights slowly crept around the bottom of his parents’ driveway and up behind his Jeep.

A Toyota. A very familiar Toyota.

There was no way. He slid back out and closed his door. “Goldie?”

She pushed her door open, her wild blond hair blowing in the evening breeze. “Were you leaving?”

As much as he loved his parents, he needed some space. Even if he couldn’t bear to sleep in his own bed, his couch would do. “Yes.” He swallowed as pride niggled in his chest. He missed her like an ache he never knew was possible. “Why?”

“If I’d been five minutes later…” She trailed off into a husky laugh. “Of course my timing in everything has to be just a few minutes off.”

He crossed his arms over his chest. “What are you doing here?”

She licked her lips. “I came here to talk to you.” She looked down at her knotted fingers. “I got your package.”

“Good. The courier told me it was delivered.” He licked his lips, trying to tamp down the hope flaring inside him. Goldie was nothing if not proper and decent. “You could have waited to talk to me when I came in to install the program.”

“No, I couldn’t wait.” Her gaze lifted to his. “I miss you.”

His belly twisted. He’d missed her every goddamn night. He had about nineteen drafts of texts in his phone, for fuck’s sake. And there she was, all golden in the setting sun. “I?—”

“No. Let me talk.”

He blew out a breath and nodded.

“I’m still mad that you took over everything and made high-handed decisions.” When he opened his mouth, she held up her finger. “No, let me finish.”

He fisted his hands under his biceps. “Okay.”

“I needed the push. I hated that I needed the push.” She made an annoyed noise in her throat. “And I love that you push me.”

Such a contrary woman. So incredibly intelligent, but so goddamn contrary it made him crazy.

She walked up to him and placed her hands on his arms. “From the first time we met, you pushed me to get out of my comfort zone. To kiss a stranger, to take a chance on you, take a chance on us, take a chance on myself.” She pulled his arms away from his chest and covered his clenched fingers. “You challenged me to ask for more. Dared me to dream bigger.”

He unfurled his fingers and twisted them with hers.

She huffed out a breath. “I want that back. I wantyouback.”

“Can I talk now?”

She gave him a watery laugh. “Yes.”

“I don’t want to be the pushy guy, Goldie. I just want to beyourguy. I can be patient.”

She snickered.

“I take the time to figure us out because I think we’re pretty great together.”

“I think we are too.” She moved closer, until her chest brushed his. “But I have to warn you. You’re getting a crazy creative type for a girlfriend.”

“Is that so?”

She nodded and rose on her toes. “I talked to my father today. We’re going to be making some changes. Big ones.”
