“If this is my one shot at getting rid of whatever Solange did to me, I’m willing to take it.”

He got off the bed and crouched in front of her, holding her face between his hands. “I’m not sure I can take a repeat performance of earlier.” He rubbed his thumbs over her cheeks. “You were in such excruciating pain.” It was incomprehensible how precious she’d become to him in such a short time. If the deep connection was severed by her death, he feared it would break something inside him.

As a lone wolf, he would wreak havoc with the world before he was brought down. The only ones who could stop him were the white and black wolves. Maybe that was the mage’s endgame, to have the lone wolves destroy each other. Or at least draw them all to the same area to make it easier to take them down.

An icy finger of fate slithered down his spine. Fuck it. Fuck fate and fickle gods and mages and any wolf who thought to take him down. He was a lone wolf, and Luna was his. Something slammed into place inside him. The yawning emptiness inside him filled with her presence.

He shook his head. His heart beat against his chest so hard it hurt. The tattoo began to burn. What the hell? Was this part of whatever spell had brought them together, a symptom of what Solange had done to Luna, or was it something else entirely?

“Kade? Are you okay?”

Was he okay? He had no fucking idea. None of the normal rules applied. Life was unpredictable. No one understood that better than him. There was no telling what would happen ten minutes, ten hours, or ten days from now. All they had was this moment.

Surging forward, he caught her lips, claiming them, savoring the sweet taste. Her sound of pleasure had fur rippling over his arms before it returned to skin. Holding her steady, he slipped his tongue into her mouth, moving in and out in a slow, easy rhythm that grew faster and more frantic. Her hands gripped his wrists, but she didn’t pull away. No, she met every thrust, opened fully, offering everything, taking what he offered.

With a roar, he yanked himself away. Hands on the floor, he panted, lungs heaving. Claws erupted from his fingers, digging into the plush carpet. Every cell in his body screamed for him to not stop until they were both naked and he was buried deep inside her. Blood raced through his veins, creating awhooshingin his ears that blocked out all other sound.

This wasn’t normal. Luna was the one person in existence who could fracture his control. He prayed it didn’t lead them both to their deaths.

Raising his head, he found her watching him. “I don’t want to stop.” Forcing himself to sit back on his knees with his hands fisted on his thighs, he ignored the painful throbbing of his erection. “But we either have to leave or prepare for company. It’s your life at stake. It’s your decision.” There was no doubt in his mind what path she’d choose. While a part of him wished she’d run, another admired her resolve.

Her chin went up, and she met his gaze. “We stay. We do whatever it takes to get rid of whatever Solange did to me.” She ran her fingers over the side of his face. “Then we finish what we started.”

Chapter Eleven

I must be out of my mind.

She turned off the water at the bathroom sink before drying her hands on the plush, white towel. Her image in the mirror seemed to mock her. For all her brave talk, she was scared to death.

Her life had devolved into a world of madness. There was so much she didn’t understand. Once whatever Solange had done to her was reversed—and she had to believe it would be—she and Kade had to talk.

She rubbed her fingers across her bottom lip, still able to feel the press of his mouth against hers. Cursing herself, she dropped her hand and smoothed the wrinkles out of her top before adjusting her sweater. There wasn’t much she could do with her hair. The clip was keeping the unruly curls contained, but she could at least brush it, make it more presentable.

Maybe it was silly to worry about her appearance, but she was facing an unknown mage. Looking good, feeling put together was like donning armor. Kade might not get it, but another woman would.

A light tap came on the door. “You okay in there?”

“Showtime,” she whispered. Reining in her emotions, she plastered a serene expression on her face and turned the handle. “Is she here?”

“Not yet.” He was leaning against the doorframe, blocking the exit. He studied her, his gaze far too aware for her liking.

“Excuse me.” She gave him a pointed look. “I need to get my purse.”

The plain T-shirt he wore molded to his muscular chest. Was it wrong to want to slip her hands beneath it and stroke his skin? Being able to see the tattoo, the marking of the gray wolf, offered reassurance. False or not, didn’t really matter. When she saw it, she was reminded that he washerwolf.

He’s notmyanything, she reminded herself. Circumstance had thrown them together. Likely some of the attraction they were experiencing was the result of danger and proximity. It was biological. Added to that, he was sexy as sin. It was natural to be drawn to him.

Liar.

Ignoring her inner voice, she tilted her chin up and met his gaze. “Was there something you wanted?”

He leaned down and brushed his lips along the curve of her neck. “I want many things.” Heat flashed down to her core. Her toes curled in her shoes. Damn him and his sexy voice. She closed her eyes, but that made it worse, heightening her remaining senses. He sniffed. “You smell delicious.”

“I washed up.” Her voice came out husky and warm, instead of precise and clipped. She cleared her throat. “Let me by.”

He stepped out of the way. She didn’t run, but she didn’t waste any time heading to the living room. She didn’t dare glance at the bed on the way along. It was far too tempting. Her awareness of him was uncanny. He had a particular affect on her senses. Blindfold her and put her in a room full of men and she’d unerringly find him. It was as if she was tuned to his frequency.

But something had changed when they’d kissed. She’d never imagined a man as dominant and dangerous as Kade Alvarez on his knees before a woman. It hadn’t diminished his power in the least. If anything, it amplified it.
