“I hate you!” I manage to spit through my screaming at Hattrick as he holds onto my wrists. I continue to struggle against him as he brings his callused hand up and slaps me hard across my face. The sting is ever present, and the metallic tang of blood pools in my mouth. I stop fighting him instantly, and as soon as my hands stop flailing, he grabs hold of my hair, yanking it with brute force toward Cain.

“Ahhh,” I scream as he drags me by my hair, then I lose my footing, trip, and fall to the floor. Hattrick grabs my hair again and yanks me along the floor by my hair until he throws me against Cain, who’s being held back by the same two assholes. I cry, seeing a chunk of my hair on the floor, and rest my palm over the tender area.

“Let him go,” Hattrick demands, and the two assholes release Cain. He flops next to me with an almighty thump. Emotion waves over me, and I rush to embrace Cain while he shifts, taking hold of me and kissing my head.

“It’s okay, baby, just hold on a little longer,” he whispers in my ear as I hold him.

“And you say you don’t love her, Cain. You know I don’t like being lied to,” Hattrick berates, squatting in front of us. I want to punch him in his rotten, ugly face, but I can’t bear to let Cain go.

“Now let me fill you in on what your boyfriend’s been doing behind your back.” He sneers as Cain holds me to him.

“Let her go. It’s me you want. Not her,” Cain pleads with Hattrick.

“No, she’s a part of you, so if I let her go, it would be like letting a part of you go, and we can’t have that.” He scoffs, and his eyes gleam. “Now Makaylie, Cain here has been my right-hand man for six years. Six… long… years of my life I have dedicated to this man, and you know how he repays me?” he asks, and I shake my aching head.

“By saying he wants to leave the business…” He waits as I blink slowly but don’t say anything. “The Baton Rouge Bachelors are not something you canjust leave! We’re an organization, an elite establishment. We’re involved with politicians, upper-class businessmen, hell, even the odd celebrity. People trust us. We keep them safe and happy with secrecy. So you see how our organization needs to remain hidden. We can’t let the public know our upper-class are delving into the not-so-bright side of life. Drugs, money laundering, the sex industry, murder for hire. It’s all tied back to us. Of course, Bachelors like myself and Cain here never do any of the dirty work. No. We’re the ones who organize the people to do the filth… you follow?” I glance at Cain to see his sullen face, instantly knowing it is all true.

Inhaling sharply, a pain in my chest overwhelms me, and I gasp, trying to just breathe.

“But that’s not where it ends, Makaylie. Bachelor Cain wants out. So you see my dilemma, don’t you? If no one ever leaves, then why should Cain be an exception? And why does he want to leave in the first place? My guess… it’s foryou.” Hattrick sneers.

I glance back at Cain as he breathes heavily.

“It’s all true, Makaylie. I was trying to get out to have a normal life with you. Remember… you make me want to be a better man, and I wanted that so badly for you. But look where that’s brought us. I knew it would end this way from our first kiss, but I wasn’t strong enough to keep away from you.”

“So that’s why every time we kissed, you looked like you were in pain? Because you didn’t want to drag me into this world?”

He nods. “Ineverwanted this. I only ever wantedyou. I’m so sorry, baby,” he sighs, leaning in and caressing my cheek in his usual way.

“Well, this is all very emotional, but I’m afraid I must get going. You know things to do, women to fuck and all that,” Hattrick states, signaling to his men as they pull us apart and pick us up from the floor.

“Say your last words, Cain!” Hattrick grunts as he aims the gun at my head.

Holding onto Cain’s hand as tightly as possible, I close my eyes, waiting for the imminent impact. My chest heaves, and I tense all my muscles, freezing with fear.

So, this is it.

This feels like déjà vu!

Thisisthe moment I die.

But this time at the hands of a complete raving lunatic.

“Payback is a bitch.” Cain snarls as I furrow my brows and open my eyes in confusion.

“Get on the ground!” People start calling out as I turn to see FBI agents and a SWAT team running into the warehouse with guns drawn.

Opening my eyes wide, I look at Cain, and he weakly smiles at me, my chest filling with hope. But Hattrick turns his gun and pulls the trigger. The blast of gunfire rings loudly, piercing my ears as he starts firing at the officers. I duck down while the other Bachelors pull out their weapons, and the echo of gunfire is heard through the warehouse, and the darkened room starts flickering with constant flares of gunfire.

“Rodberg, get her out of here,” Cain calls over the noise.

Everyone breaks off in all directions. It’s chaos as bullets buzz past us, ricocheting off the walls, the iron clinking and fracturing with the blast of the bullets.

“No, I won’t leave you,” I yell.

Cain leans in, kissing my lips forcefully. He looks into my eyes as a bullet flies past my head and lodges into the shipping container I’m hiding against.

“I love you, Makaylie. Go.Now!” he demands, pushing me into Rodberg, who grabs me around my waist and picks me up. I scream as Rodberg drags me toward the exit while Cain turns and runs back inside.
