“Cain…Caaaiiin.Rodberg, go back. We need to help him,” I yell.

The gunfire continues, but Rodberg drags me away over his shoulder and into the safety of the parking lot behind a police cordon.

“No way, cutie pie. I had my orders from the start. When Cain gives the word, I must protect you at any cost.”

Fear encases my very being.

Fear for my life.

Fear for Rodberg.

But an overwhelming fear for Cain, who’s still in there battling it out with the freaking FBI and his workmates or whatever the hell they are, who have officially turned on him.

Cain has no one on his side, and that thought terrifies me more than words can say.

The echoes of gunfire belt out through the quiet night, and I sob so hard I’m almost dry-retching as Rodberg puts me down. The firefight continues to wreak havoc in its chaos and unrelenting pandemonium.

“Good job, James,” a policewoman says to Rodberg, patting him on the shoulder.

What the hell?

“Rodberg, you have to go back in there. We have to get Cain!”

He smiles and places his hands on my shoulders, looking into my eyes, trying to soothe me. “He’ll be fine. Our guyswillprotect him,” he tries to reassure me, but it only confuses me further.

“Rodberg, I don’t know what show you were watching, butyourguys just tried to kill him.”

The policewoman laughs and pats him on the back. “Guess it’s time for the truth, James?” she states, confusing me more.

“Why the fuck does she keep calling you James?” I blurt out, completely beside myself.

He exhales and looks me in the eyes. “Because that’s my name, Makaylie. James Rodberry, undercover for the FBI.”

My eyes bug open, and I shake my head slightly, trying to comprehend what I’ve just heard. “Umm… what?” I question, dumbfounded.

He chuckles as my mouth drops open with shock. “You’ve gotta be kidding me? They let someone like you in the FBI?”

He laughs. “Yeah, stranger things, hey. Cain knew. He was trying to get out of the Bachelors, so he came to us for help to expose them. I was placed with Cain to get inside information and evidence, but I was also there to protect him when the need arose. We’ve been working on getting the evidence we needed against the Bachelors and the people using their so-called methods for an incredibly long time. We finally got enough evidence to take down the Baton Rouge Bachelors and their clientele. Cain took the chance to leave today when Hattrick called, but he knew you were suspicious. When I saw what had happened to Joey, I knew I had to raise the alarm and get everyone here ASAP.”

Opening my eyes wide, a sense of excitement floods me, and a flutter filters through my stomach. “So, Joey is okay? That was all a part of your plan?”

His face falls, and he shakes his head.

My stomach sinks.

“I’m sorry, Makaylie, I didn’t know you were here. If I did, I could have done something. Fuck!” he murmurs as hot tears pool in my eyes again.

I hadn’t even noticed the gunfire had stopped.

“So she’s…”

He nods. “Yes. She was a great girl,” he offers as he pulls me to him.

It’s like she’s been shot all over again, and I’m watching her die for the second time. It hits me hard, and I stumble in Rodberg’s embrace as I let all the emotion out, crying into his chest as it hits me like a tidal wave.

“James, it’s over. We have Hattrick and a few of the others. I think we’re missing some… the main one being Trap. But we’ll put out an APB. We’ll find them. You’ve done it, James. You’ll surely be promoted for the demise of the almighty Baton Rouge Bachelors,” the female cop says.

Rodberg nods and wraps his arm around my shoulders, sighing heavily.
