Rodberg’s playful demeanor drops, and he nods. “You shouldn’t be here. You’re putting her in danger.”

I lean close to his ear so only he can hear. “Put in an anonymous tip. They will find Trap and the others in an abandoned asylum on the outskirts of New Orleans. Turns out they weren’t careful with their candles, and when Trap got bitten by a cottonmouth snake and panicked, he knocked the candles over while the others were sleeping, and they all burned to death. It’s a real shame.”

Rodberg pulls back, his eyes focusing on me intently. “They won’t find anything to tie back to you, will they?”

“Nope! All taken care of.”

Rodberg’s face lights up, and he wraps his arm around my shoulders. “Well then, let’s take you in to see your woman. She doesn’t know you’re here.”

“She doesn’t?”

“Nuh-uh.”

Letting out a heavy exhale, I stop walking momentarily and look at him. “Does she blame me? For Joey?”

Rodberg grabs my shoulders and looks into my eyes. “Makaylie doesn’t blame you for anything. The only thing she does is miss you like crazy.”

A genuine smile crosses my face, and I don’t wait. I take off, leaving Rodberg behind as I run for her door. I hear Rodberg chuckling, but I don’t care. I need to get to her. I shove the door open and rush inside. “Makaylie!” I yell out, running into the living room.

My eyes snap around, looking everywhere for her, but she’s not there. “Little dove?” I call, starting the walk to her bedroom, but she rushes out when I head in, and we slam into each other. My hands grab her shoulders, steadying her as she gasps, her big doe eyes meeting mine. They instantly flood with tears. “Cain?” she whispers.

My hand brushes her cheek, and I lean in, pressing my forehead to hers, just needing to smell her. “I’m here. I’m never leaving you again.”

Her bottom lip trembles, her hands sliding up, gripping my shirt, and pulling me closer, like I am her lifeline. “I never thought I was going to see you again.”

Shaking my head as it leans against hers, I let out a small growl at the thought. “That was never going to happen, little dove. I wasalwayscoming back to you.”

Her hand slides up around my neck, into my hair, gripping tight. “I love you so much.”

“I fucking love you too,” I tell her, then slam my lips to hers, needing her like I’ve never needed her before. Our tongues collide, and the world that has been stationary for the last month begins to rotate again but is now spinning at lightning speed.

Makaylie kept me going.

She is my life force.

When I kiss her, everything feels fucking right in the world.

But suddenly, she pulls back, her face going pale as her hand rushes to her mouth and she darts past me for the bathroom. I furrow my brows, following her as she kneels on the floor and empties the contents of her stomach into the bowl.

“Shit!” I rasp, dropping down next to her, pulling her hair back from her face and rubbing her back. “Oh, baby. I never meant to make you this emotional.”

She heaves one more time, then slowly sinks onto the cold tiles. I grab a glass of water, and she takes it, shaking her head. “It’s not you. I’ve been sick for the last couple of weeks. I think it’s all the stress.”

“In any case, you’re pale and clammy, and if this isn’t the first time, I think we should take you to the doctor. Right no—”

“Cain, no! I just got you back. I want to spend time with you.”

“And what if something is really wrong? And then I lose you because we are being selfish. No, Makaylie. We’re going.”

A weak smile lights her face and she chuckles with a small sigh. “Always so bossy.”

I stand, helping her up, and wrap my arm around her waist. “Let’s go.”

We walk out to the living room. Rodberg’s sitting on the sofa with his feet up on the coffee table and a disappointed look on his face. “You chucking your guts up was not the fuck fest I was hoping to hear when I came in here, cutie pie.”

I roll my eyes as Makaylie smiles. “Cain wants to take me to the doctor.”

Rodberg jumps up from the sofa and throws his hands up in celebration. “Hale-fucking-lujah! I’ve been trying to get her to go for weeks. But would she listen to the old Iron Rod? Oooh no. I’ll tell the guards because they’re still waiting on the anonymous tip, so as far as they’re concerned, you being here is still a top-level threat. Taking her to the doctor needs to be under strict supervision.”
