She sniffles, her hand moving to her stomach, and she nods, tears welling in her eyes. “Okay… I don’t want to be in Baton Rouge either. Let’s go somewhere near the beach. I want our baby to grow up near the ocean with a beautiful view.”

Smiling from ear to ear, I inhale deeply, loving this idea. “Done! As soon as we get the all-clear from the doctor, and we know our baby is safe, I’m going to get us the fuck out of here.”

“No more Bachelors,” she whispers.

“No more Baton Rouge,” I reply and lean in, pressing my lips to hers with a sense of relief washing over me.

I never thought I would be the guy to get the girl, to get the family, to be the demise of the Bachelors and watch it burn to the ground.

But in the end, I’m glad it ended this way.

We lost some good people along the way.

Some we will never, ever forget.

But maybe, just maybe, we can find a way for them to live on.

By us living on.

By us moving on.

By living a great life after the Baton Rouge Bachelors.

EPILOGUE

CAIN

Six Years Later

The blistering sun swelters down on my tanned skin as I sit back in my deck chair overlooking our private beach. My aviators barely stop the glare from the midday sun as I sip on a mocktail with a smile.

A light scream fills the air, and I sit up, pulling my sunglasses down to see where it came from.

Makaylie laughs beside me. “Stop! You’re so protective of her. She’s probably just found another jellyfish or got covered in seaweed again. Let her be a kid and play, Cain!” She groans, lounging back, sipping on her mocktail, then resting the long glass on her swollen eight-month-pregnant belly.

I huff and keep looking for Joey, our five-year-old daughter, who is running around, happily playing with seaweed. Exactly as her mother said she would be doing. Honestly, it’s a miracle Joey turned out to be a beautiful, healthy little girl with everything Makaylie went through early in her pregnancy.

Maybe that’s why I am so protective.

Exhaling, I slump back in my chair and groan, pulling my sunglasses back down on my face. “I don’t know how you can be so fucking calm all the time.”

Makaylie chuckles, shaking her head. “Lord knows how you will be when this little man arrives. Having two of them is going to drive you crazy.”

I close my eyes, feeling a headache coming on. “I swear it was easier running an elite establishment and worrying about criminals than taking care of a five-year-old.”

Makaylie bursts out laughing as I feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I turn dramatically, pull the gun out from beneath my deck chair, and aim it at whoever is walking toward us.

No one should have access to this beach.

But when I see Rodberg slowly approaching, I quickly stow my weapon.

I haven’t seen him for a few months.

He’s been coming by less and less.

He has a job that needs doing.
