A satisfied smirk lights his face. “No. I amnotfucking kidding you.”

A red haze filters over my eyes, blinding me with rage. “You’re punishing me by not letting me come, all because I ordered my own dinner? Do younotsee how ridiculous that is, Cain?”

He looks at me with his brows furrowed but says nothing.

Grunting, I exhale, throwing my hands up in annoyance, and push past him to unlock the stall. The door flies open, and I button my jeans as I storm out of the restroom, not looking back. I notice two elderly, snobby-looking ladies watching me, tsk-tsking as I walk past. Ignoring them, I go to the table where we were sitting, grab my bag, and walk straight out of the restaurant.

Fuck Cain and his fucking ridiculousness!

“Makaylie… Makaylie, wait!” Cain yells to me, but I keep walking, exiting the restaurant.

My feet hit the pavement hard, striking with the force and anger I’m exuding. I’m walking—I just don’t know where to—when I hear the restaurant door open, and Cain flies out after me.

“Makaylie, will you stop?” he yells as he runs up behind me.

But I keep pounding the pavement as he catches up, saying nothing. We walk for a few moments in an awkward silence until my anger gets the better of me, and I stop, turning to glare at him and push his chest. “Jesus, Cain! Whatthe fuckwas that? I can’t believe you embarrassed me like that, youfucking jerk. Those ladies knew exactly what we were doing, and you made it so I couldn’t stop. You’re driving me insane.Fuuuck!” I scream at him, and he takes my wrists, holding them tight. My pulse races, my blood boiling so hot that I think my skin might start melting at any moment. “What? What do you want to say now?Stop making a scene, Makaylie. You belong to me, Makaylie. Don’t you dare defy me, Makaylie.Well, how about this for defiance… fuck you, Cain! Fuck you and your controlling bullshit!”He grips my wrists tighter, pulling my entire body flush to his as hot tears prick my eyes. “No, don’t you dare try and make this all right, Cain, with your sexual mastery,” I yell as I try to struggle out of his grasp.

“Makaylie…Makaylie, will you stop struggling.” He grunts as he looks around at the people now watching the domestic disturbance playing out on their street right in front of them. I pull harder to free my arms from his grasp. “Makaylie!”

“Stop fucking saying my name like I matter to you. I’m nothing more to you than someone you can control and fuck. Well, not anymore, Cain. Do you hear me?Not… any… more!”I yell, freeing one hand from his grip to bring it up and slap him across his face. My palm stings, the radiation of the slap vibrating through my entire hand as he flinches and grabs my wrist again.

“I regret it, okay? You know my issues. I’m working on them, but, little dove, you have to give me some leeway. This… who I am, it’s all I know. I’m trying so damn hard to make this work because you… you’re it for me. Nothing else matters more in my life than you. I know I’m hard to deal with. I know I can be a prick, but I want to be a better man foryou,Makaylie. Can’t you see that?”

“Wanting to be and actually being a better man are twoentirelydifferent things, Cain.”

“I know. Trust me when I say I’m going to do better. For you, I willbebetter. For us, I will work my shit out.”

As I look into his sincere, scared eyes, I can tell he’s trying. I soften my stance with a sigh, slumping my shoulders. “I don’t know, Cain,” I say honestly, calming down enough for him to let me go.

“Cain? Is that you?” a woman calls out.

CHAPTER THREE

MAKAYLIE

A tattooed, fiery, red-headed woman in an extremely revealing red halter dress approaches us. She’s stunning.

Cain instantly drops his grip on my arms, taking a large step away from me. Confused, I snap my head back, assessing him. Cain’s eyes are wide. His breathing hitches, almost like he’s been caught, looking guilty as fuck. A somewhat panicked look crosses his face.

What the hell?

“Cain? Itisyou. You’ve been missing in action, honey. What’s going on?” she asks, leaning in and kissing him on the cheek. Actually, no, it’s closer to his mouth as her lips graze the edge of his lips. My mouth opens wide as my stomach drops through the floor, and I take a step back from Cain when the woman slides in between us. He looks me directly in the eyes, his brows crunched, his pupils wide, his nostrils flaring. If I didn’t know better, I would think he’s terrified right now.

Terrified that I’ve found out about her, I bet.

Folding my arms over my chest, I exhale loudly.

“Selene, yeah, I am busy,” he mumbles, now avoiding eye contact as she turns toward me, sizing me up and down with a salacious smirk.

How dare she! She’s the intruder here.

“And who’s this precious little ladybug, Cain? Trap never told me you were seeing someone.” Her voice is laced with sarcasm as her fingertip runs along my arm. I step away while glaring at Cain, who’s still avoiding eye contact with me.

“Who? Jessica? She’s no one. Aren’t you, Jessica?” Cain blurts out, finally looking at me and creasing his brows dramatically.

Who the fuck is Jessica?

“What?” I ask in confusion.
