Mav shakes his head, letting out a huff. “What the hell makes you think you’re the right fit for Clover?Weshould be the ones helping her, not a damn stranger.”

Sadie fights back her smile, standing taller. “No offense,Mav, but I graduated as a valedictorian. I know the syllabi back to front. I am a veracious learner. I like to knowexactlyhow things work.” She smiles. “The projects and tasks Clover will deal with this year at school will be the most difficult for her yet. Icanhelp her, guideher. Help her grow into the amazing woman I know she is capable of becoming.Ifyou let me.”

“This is bullshit!” Mav grunts, stands from his chair, and begins pacing the room. “You think you’re better than us.”

I sink into myself before I turn back to face Sadie.

She raises her hands to placate Mav. “That’s the furthest thing from the truth. I don’t think I’m better than anyone. I can assure you of that. But what I will say next you’renotgoing to like—”

“Oh, here we go,” Mav blurts out.

Sadie continues with a huff, “For Clover to settle into this school year, she needs more consistency and less drama in her life.” She glances up and down at Mav’s club cut, subtly pointing to it. “That is something that definitely won’t help her.”

Mav follows her, glancing down at his Defiance patch, and lets out an obnoxious scoff. “You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about, lady! You might be pretty, but you’re prettyfucking stupid.” He growls, storming for the door.

I stand, feeling the tension in the air is reaching a critical level. “Mav!” I call out to him, but he opens the door, walks out, and slams it behind him with a loud thud.

Mrs. Bedford jumps in her seat, her hand rushing to her chest as I turn, shaking my head. “I am so,sosorry. He doesn’t like change. And anyone saying anything against the club is a hard limit.”

Sadie picks up her coffee cup, holding it to her chest. “I understand. It is hard to hear that the thing you love the most is the problem causing the damage. But sometimes you need to hear these things to be able to move forward and help those we love.”

I hear what Sadie is saying, and her heart is in the right place. That much is obvious. I just don’t know how I will get Maverick on board. “Let me talk to him. As far as I am concerned, I want what’s best for Clover. And Sadie, if you can help Clover get her grades to where they need to be, then I’m more than happy to bring you on to help. No matter the cost. Whatever Clover needs, she gets.”

Sadie steps around the desk and over to me. “I can tell you both love Clover very much… Mav especially. It’s the only reason he’s fighting this. But if you can get him to come around, I can start with Clover at the end of the week. The sooner we get on top of this, the better.”

She pulls a card out from her phone wallet, and I take it.

“Thank you, Sadie. I appreciate you taking the time to help Clover, and I’ll get Mav to see sense.”

“I hope that you do. For Clover’s sake.”

I reach out, shaking her hand, then I dip my head to the principal. “Thank you for your time,” I tell them, then turn for the door, my anger beginning to bubble inside me as I search for my little brother.

Walking into the parking lot, I spot Mav pacing back and forth. He is fuming, mumbling to himself before I step up to him. “Are you happy with yourself?” I blurt out at him.

He spins to me, his eyes wide, his face red like a man enraged as he grits his teeth. “She is insufferable. Can you believe her? Thinks she can get away with telling me what to do with that angelic voice of hers. Sadie.Ha!More like Satan,” he argues a little too forcefully.

The corner of my lip turns up as I reach out, grab him, and force him to look at me. “Oh. My. God!”

He yanks away from me and continues pacing before I burst out laughing, knowing I picked up on the energy surrounding him earlier. “You’re annoyed because you think she’s cute, and you can’t stand being attracted to someone who pisses you off.”

He stops pacing, looks me dead in the eyes, and curls his lip. “Shut up!”

I laugh harder, shoving him in the arm before we move to get in the car.

I can’t predict how this is going to turn out.

Mav has a hard-on for Clover’s new tutor just as much as he hates her. I can’t tell if he’s going to be spiteful and malicious or fall flat on his face trying to woo her.

Either way, I can’t wait to return, cuddle up in bed with Alpha, and tell him all about it.

Because life at the clubhouse is all about that.

Spending time with the people you love.

I don’t know if Mav is about to meet his match, but I know I have definitely met mine, and I couldn’t be happier with how life has changed for me.

The club, my family, this life—it’s all made me feel one undeniable thing.

Finally, I am…

…free as a bird.
