Pulling back from him, he licks his lips, then reaches for my hand. “C’mon, come inside. Let me show ya ’round.”

Interlocking my fingers with his, I can’t help but notice the tingling feeling vibrating between our fingers. I glance down at our hands as he leads us toward the clubhouse, a nervoustension forming in the pit of my stomach.

I don’t get nervous.

I am a cold, calculating killer.

But there is something about Alpha that has me on the edge of my seat.

Something is unnerving about the man.

And he’s already got me breaking rules for him.

He knows my name.

Myrealname.

At the time, it took me a moment to remember it. I’ve been Blue Jay for so long, or other random names when on a mission, that I forgot who my real identity is. So hearing him calling me Haven all the time is somewhat jarring.

But in a good way.

I like it.

Which is not a fucking good sign.

I have to remember why I am here.

What my duty is…

First and foremost, I am a bird from The Nest.

And if I don’t complete this mission, it will bemyhead on the chopping block. There’s no one to give me a pep talk like I gave Poppy.

Walking inside the clubhouse,my eyes widen at the size of this place and the fact they can have vehicles inside. The first thing that grabs my attention is the giant mezzanine level, with a room upstairs and the vehicles underneath. Some even appear to be heavy farming machinery. To the right of the mezzanine level are three large tables, where I assume everyone gathers for mealtimes. Behind them, in a U-shape, is a huge sofa surrounding a pool table and a massive television against the wall.

A bar is situated on the opposite side of the clubhouse, attached to another room, probably the kitchen. Another roomcomes off that one with a door attached that looks like a safe. It’s some kind of securely locked room.Mental note—it must be an important place for the clubhouse.Another smaller room comes off the side of that, and off the side of that room, I can see a smaller unisex bathroom.

At the end of the room, near the sofas and television, I spot an opening heading to a hall. There may even be a staircase I can’t quite see without stepping back and making it obvious that I am scoping out the place. I can’t be sure what is back there. Hopefully, I will be able to figure out the layout of this place quickly. However, the main area of the clubhouse seems fairly easy to digest.

“This place is massive!” I turn to Alpha when he walks us to some brothers sitting on the sofas.

He raises his brows suggestively. “I tend to do things big. But you already know that.”

Snorting out a laugh, I tilt my head in acknowledgment. “Can’t argue that.”

Alpha smirks as he steps up to one of his brothers, resting a hand on his shoulder while he sits on the sofa. His head snaps up to look at his president, and the second I look at him, something inside me shifts. Like the weight of a magnet draws me to him. I can’t place it. It’s like I know him, but I can’t figure out from where because I can’t even picture his face. The shock of the moment’s intensity takes my breath from me when he shifts his eyes, narrowing them on me.

“Maverick, I need your mechanical expertise for a moment. You got a sec?” Alpha asks.

Maverick stands, spinning to face me, his eyes focused on me intensely. He doesn’t respond, just continues staring at me as I stare right back at him.

“Mav?” Alpha grunts.

Maverick’s eyes move quickly from me to his president, andhe clears his throat. “Yeah. Shit! Sorry. What?”

Alpha snorts out a laugh. “You doing okay there, brother? Or do I need to give Livvy a call? Don’t want you stroking out on us.”

Mav waves his hand through the air. “Sure, I can help. What’s up?”
