“My…friendhas a loose chain on her bike. Can you fix it up for her while I show her around the clubhouse?”

Maverick nods in acknowledgment. “Yeah, sure. Easy fix.” He offers his hand for me to shake. “Nice to meet you. I’m Maverick, but the guys normally call me Mav.”

“Hey, thanks for fixing my bike. I’m Haven.”

His eyes widen like he’s seeing a ghost. “Out of curiosity, where are you and your family from?”

Alpha frowns, and I shift uncomfortably. I don’t know what it is about this Maverick guy, but he is already starting to dig, so I need to play this carefully. “I don’t have any family. They’ve been gone a long time. It’s just me.”

Mav sinks a little, his shoulders withdrawing into themselves. “Oh… okay. Forget I asked. I’ll just go fix your bike now.”

Furrowing my brow at the disappointment crossing his face before he walks off, I turn to Alpha with a questioning gaze.

Alpha shrugs in return. “I have no idea what that was about if that’s what you’re gonna ask me,” he replies to my unspoken question.

“Well, I don’t know why your guy was being weird, but don’t let that hold you back from introducing your other brothers.”

“Glutton for punishment.” Alpha chuckles. “Let’s do this.” He takes my hand again, leading me around the other side of the sofa, where three more brothers sit and chat. They all glance up as we approach. “Swift, Loki, Rip… this is Haven. Haven, Swift is my VP. Loki is our tech guy, and Rip… well, we have no explanation for Rip.”

The other guys laugh when Rip nods his head matter-of-factly. “Yo, dude. I am the one who totally keeps this place running, man. Ha, likeRunning Man, you know, the Korean TV show?”

Loki smirks as Swift smacks Rip up the back of the head. “Don’t scare the poor woman off with your bullshit, Rip,” Swift grumbles.

I shrug, smiling at Rip. “Actually, I really enjoy the way the cast has to compete in missions to win the race. I find it thoroughly entertaining.”

Rip reaches up to give me a high five, and I slap his hand in response. “Gnarly. I like her, Pres.”

Alpha tilts his head, looking at me. “You understand Korean?”

Raising my brow at him, I grin. “I speak several languages. I’m smart like that.”

“Where are you from, Haven?” Loki asks, forcing me to drop eye contact with Alpha.

I turn to look at the tech guru. I have done a lot of research on him just so I knew what I would be up against. I knew he would want to dive right into my history the second I started planting myself into this club. It seems he’s already starting to find pieces so he can put a profile together on me. The thing is, I’m a step ahead of him and have my fake profile everywhere online, readily available for him to find.

“Originally from Florida, but I was young when my family started moving around. I returned to Florida to go to college for a bachelor’s degree in animal science during the day and night courses in language studies. Just been making my way across the country ever since trying to find my feet.”

“Something in particular make you leave Florida again?” Loki narrows his eyes on me, wanting to push for more.

Alpha glances at me like he’s interested to hear my ‘story.’ So I crane my neck to the side and huff. “I might have gotten into a bar fight and threatened a guy with a broken beer bottle. He pressed charges, and it’s on my record. I’m having trouble getting anyone to hire me.”

Alpha snorts out a laugh as he wraps his arm around my shoulders. “Now, why can I picture thatsoclearly in my mind?”

I shrug him off me, glaring at him. “If you’re not careful, I’ll threaten to stab you too.”

Alpha continues to laugh, shaking his head. “What did this guy do to make you so mad?”

Folding my arms over my chest, I raise my chin. “He knocked my drink over my white shirt, then told me my tits looked great in my now see-through shirt.”

Alpha bursts out laughing. “Yeah, I can imagine that happening. Honestly, I’m surprised you didn’t slit his throat.”

Pursing my lips, I huff. “If the dickhead didn’t have his pompous asshole friends around him, I probably would have.”

Rip begins a slow clap, standing up and giving me an ovation as Swift smiles, but Loki’s still assessing me.

“You’re a fucking knockout, Betty. I think you totally belong here. Pres, can we keep her?” Rip asks, and I can’t help the giggle that escapes me.

“We can’t keep her, but maybe she can stay for a little while?” Alpha shifts his gaze to me, and I nod.
