I have been sent here for one purpose only.

To get close to Alpha.

Not for me to drop my guard and fall for him.

Remember the rules…

Never tell them your birth name.

Never get attached.

Always check you’ve removed any evidence.

I broke rule one the first night I met Alpha. But I guess in all fairness, I could never in my wildest dreams have ever imagined he would be my next target. If Crow found out I was running this mission with my real name in play, I don’t know how she would react.

She told me not to let her down.

In a way I already have.

As for rule two—never get attached—my connection to Alpha is different to every mark I have ever encountered.

Attachment, though?

No. It can’t be.

That’s not what’s happening here.

God, I have only spent an afternoon here with the man.

But the idea that this club could be a life-changing event forme sits at the back of my throat like a weird taste that won’t go away. It’s there, reminding me there is something I’m missing. There is a seed of doubt planted, and I just don’t know if, when all this comes to a head, I am going to be able to pull that damn trigger.

But in the end, I won’t have a choice.

It’s Alpha or me.

And I’m not ready to die.

I go to answer Ellie, but Alpha returns, letting out an exhale. “A nurse will be here soon to check on you.”

Ellie snaps her head around to Alpha. “Oh, you didn’t…”

Alpha’s nostrils flare. “She wouldn’t go to a hospital, and she needs to be looked at. I had no one else to call.”

My brows furrow and Ellie exhales, turning back to face me with a weak smile. She reaches out, grabbing my hands in hers. “I’m here for whatever you need, okay, baby girl? Anything at all.”

“Thanks, Ellie, appreciate it,” I tell her before she stands, glaring at Alpha.

He rolls his eyes as she walks off, and Alpha sits next to me, gently pulling my cold pack away from my nose to assess the damage. He grimaces, and I sigh.

“That bad, huh?”

He shrugs. “I’d still fuck you.”

I snort out a laugh, playfully punching him in his side. “You’re an asshole.”

He slides his arm around my shoulders and pulls me to him. I don’t know why, but instinctively, I cuddle into his side. I have never been a cuddler, but there’s something about this moment where I want to be near him.

“Um… this nurse who’s coming to take care of you, she’s an old friend. Her name’s Olivia. We call her Livvy.”
