Groaning, I glare at him. “Fine. I’m dizzy and nauseous. A little wobbly on my legs and really fucking tired.”

Livvy inhales sharply, pulling out a small flashlight from her kit. She holds up her finger. “Look straight at my finger for me.”

“Is this absolutely necessary?” I mumble.

“Humor me?” Livvy inquires.

Rolling my eyes, I look forward at her finger. She flashes the light from the outer edge of my eye inward on both eyes, then she bites her lip, folding her arms across her chest. “Your pupils are slower to react to the light, but it’s only marginally. You clearly have a concussion, but I’d like to take you in to ensure there’s no increased intracranial pressure.”

Alpha stands, a concerned look crossing his features. “English, Liv?”

“A brain injury.”

I snort out a laugh, shaking my head. “I’m fine, honestly, Alpha. Look, thank you for taking care of me and for your concern, but I’m not going to the hospital for any testing.”

A low growl reverberates from Alpha’s chest. “Haven—”

“Alpha,no. I’mnotgoing.”

Livvy rolls her shoulders, putting her things back into hermed kit. “I can’t make you go in to get checked, but you need someone to stay with you and take care of you for the next few days. Someone who can watch for any symptoms of a brain bleed?”

I hesitate because I will be alone if I leave the clubhouse and go to the motel. Even though I can’t go to the hospital because I’m a bird and, therefore, I technically don’t exist, I don’t want to run the risk of stroking out and dying on my own in some seedy motel.

Alpha steps forward, sensing my rising anxiety. “You can stay here. We can monitor you, and Livvy can come check on you in a few days.”

I turn to Alpha, and a sincere look of appreciation crosses my face. “Alpha, I…” I don’t know how to finish my sentence.

He reaches out, grabs my hand, and simply nods. “It’s okay, little lamb, I got you,” he tells me, his thumb grazing the top of my hand.

Our eyes lock, a moment passing between us as we stare at each other while my heart hammers in my chest. It feels like my entire world is collapsing in on itself.

This couldn’t be going more to plan than I needed.

I’m infiltrating just like I’m supposed to.

Then why does it feel different?

Why does it feel like I am staying at the club for an entirely different reason than the one I have been sent here to do?

Livvy abruptly clears her throat, making us both snap our heads to look at her. “Alpha, a word?”

He drops his hold on me, exhaling with a nod. “Yeah, all right. The Chapel?”

Livvy side-eyes me, then nods. “Mm-hmm,” she states, then takes off for the stairs to the mezzanine level.

“Did I get you in trouble or something?” I widen my already puffing eyes.

He snorts out a laugh. “Oh no, little lamb, I did thatallon my own. You relax, take it easy. Do you need me to send someone to pick up some stuff for you?”

“I don’t really need anything, just some clothes.”

“You and Navy are about the same size. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind you sharing some of her things for a few days. If not, I can send her out shopping for you.”

“I have a feeling I’m going to need a few pairs of panties. There’s this old guy here who will probably tear them off me.”

Alpha grins wickedly. “Old guys don’t have the time left to waste on taking panties off, so they rip them to save time. Which brings me back to my point… I’ll send Navy out shopping.”

Chuckling, I dip my head. “Okay… and Alpha?” He glances back at me, raising his brow. “Thank you.”
