I reach out, squeezing her knee. “You stop that. Nothing you say or think is stupid. Talk to me.”

“I don’t know. I read online that having diabetes when you’re young can cause problems with attention and memory. With learning new things…” She pauses, and the glistening in her eyes is a dead giveaway. “I think I have that, or maybe I’m just dumb.”

I turn to face her, placing my mug on the counter beside her. Taking both her hands in mine, I stare at her almost aggressively. “Now you hear this… you arenotdumb!Do. You. Understand. Me?”Her watering eyes drop from mine. “Eyes up. Look at me! If you are having trouble concentrating because of your medical condition, then we need to go down to the school and tell them that so they can be accommodating. Are the teachers and kids picking on you?”

She nods just once, and I grit my teeth, turning away from her so I don’t show her how fucking furious I am. With a long breath, I turn back to face her, grabbing her hands again. “Clover, you’re about to enter your final year of high school. You need to have the best support you can get. I’m going to talk to Maverick. We’re gonna get this settled for you, okay?”

A single tear falls down her cheek as she rushes forward, embracing me. I hug her back tightly. I don’t know what it is about Clover, but I have this innate need to protect her. If those fuckers at the school are making her feel unworthy because of her medical condition, then I will rain down hell to make sure she obtains the proper care and help.

“I’m so glad you joined the club, Haven,” Clover states, and Navy smiles, giving me a small head bob.

I wipe the tears from her face and smile. “Us girls gotta stick together. Right, Navy?” I ask, and she chuckles.

“Right! See, Clo? I told you. You should have told someone other than me. This club is always going to fight for you. Maverick will too. He’ll understand.”

“Oh, I’m going to make him understand all right.” I snort out a laugh.

Clover giggles. “You’re so strong, Haven. I want to be just like you when I’m older.”

My stomach churns. “No, you don’t, Clo. You want to be just like you… you want to be your own person. Because you, as you are, is fucking perfect.” I lean in, pressing a kiss to her head. “Don’t you forget that, no matter what those little shits at school say to you.” She sniffles when I look into her eyes.

“What would we do without you, Haven?” she asks.

My heart beats rapidly because I don’t want to leave this club. Leave these people. They’ve become like family, one I have never had, and once they find out I have been sent to infiltrate them and kill their president, they’re all going to want nothing to do with me. I think losing these amazing people is going to hurt like hell. But maybe that’s exactly where I belong—in the fiery pits of hell for my deception.

In the world of assassins, I am notorious.

I am the elite of the elite.

I get the job done.

Every time without fail, hesitation, consequence, emotion, or attachment.

But this job, this mission, this duty could be the order that clips the wings of the infamous Blue Jay.

Because this?

This istoo much.

I can’t keep doing this to these people.

I decided last night to help Alpha by finding a way to get hisdaughter back to him. Now, before I have to leave, I will do everything in my power to help the people here who need me, including Clover. My life has been about taking life. Now I want to help improve it, if I can.

I grip Clover’s hand tighter and weakly smile, preparing to lie right to her face. “You’ll never have to find out.”

She embraces me again, and I pull back, grab my mug of coffee, and exhale. “Okay, I’m going to go talk to your brother. We’re gonna devise a plan on how to approach your school.”

Clover nods. “Do you want me to come with you?”

“No, you stay here and enjoy your time with Navy. I’ll chat with Mav, and we’ll come up with a plan. You leave it to us, okay? Don’t you worry about a thing.”

“Thank you. I didn’t want to drop out. I only have two months left, then I’ll be a senior next year.”

“Exactly! Let’s make the rest of your schooling life the best it can be, yeah? Then we can talk about what comes after.”

She nods, I wink at her, and raise my mug, taking a sip of the nectar of the gods. She pulls up her cell to take a picture of me. I raise my hand in front of my face but she takes the picture with a chuckle.

"You’re just like the guys. They don’t like having their pictures taken either. Don’t worry, I blur all the faces out for my socials.”
