"You wanna waste time moving it?” she asks.

Glancing back at the civilians staring at us in shock and the chaos we’ve created on the highway, right now, I couldn’t give a flying fuck. I just need to get to The Nest and get this shit settled. Rushing around the other side of the helo, I hop in and buckle myself into the passenger side, pulling on my headphones just as Haven draws the helo off the ground. The people on the highway stare at us like they have no clue what the hell just happened. Pulling out my cell, I send a quick text to Loki.

Me:Disengage tracker on van. Nothing can lead to us. Leaving it abandoned on highway. Talk soon.

I flick the comms, connecting me to Haven, and I look at her, wondering if I truly know her at all. She exhales and turns to face me as if she can sense me staring at her. “I should have told you sooner who I was and that I was sent to you. And for that, I’m sorry.”

“That night at Gears?” I ask.

“Coincidence. I got my kill order for you a week later.”

Inhaling sharply, I grit my teeth. “So the loose bike chain was bullshit? A way to get into the club?”

She nods. “If it helps, I feel like shit about it. I have never felt like this about a mission before, Alpha. I’ve never felt the way I do for you. It’s why I’m willing to risk it all for you. Why I went back to The Nest and got Poppy for you. This is all new territory for me. It’s always been so clinical, so impersonal. Infiltrate and carry out the order.”

“Who runs The Nest?” I ask.

“I don’t know who owns it, but two women run it. We all have code names. Their names are Crow and Vulture.”

“And yours is Blue Jay.”

She slowly turns to face me and nods. “Yes.”

“All bird names?”

“Those who make it through training are designated with a bird name to fit their personality. Poppy was struggling with her training and fitting in, so I gave her the designation of hummingbird to give her the confidence to keep going. I tried to look out for her, Alpha, even before I knew who she was.”

Running my hands through my hair, I let out an exasperated exhale. “I can’t believe my daughter was being trained to be an assassin. Was the training tough?”

Haven side-eyes me and weakly smiles. That shit doesn’t giveme any comfort.

“She’s stronger than you give her credit for. She has grown a lot in the last two years and will grow into an amazing woman because of the things she has been taught. Do I think she is damaged from The Nest training? No. But it will help her flourish because we got her out in time.”

My chest squeezes, and I don’t know if it is from relief or grief that I have missed the last two years of Poppy’s life and that Haven has been able to witness the amazing girl that Poppy has blossomed into. But either way, I am incredibly happy to have her back.

Now, I need to venture into The Nest and figure out who’s behind all this.

Haven presses the button to slide the doors closed on the helo, blocking some of the noise. I furrow my brows, wondering what she’s doing. Then she picks up her cell and places it on the dock. “I’m going to call Mav now and make my move. I need you to work with me on this plan, okay?”

I haven’t come this far to back out now, so Ihaveto roll with this. “I hear you, let’s do this.”

She dials Maverick’s number, and he answers, “Haven? You okay?”

“Mav, are you around the others? Can they hear you?” she asks.

He’s quiet momentarily, then continues, “No, you’re good. Is the Pres with you?”

“I am, Mav.”

“Are you on your way back to the clubhouse?”

Haven continues to fly toward Tijuana and exhales. “Mav, I need you to do something for me. I need you to go to where everyone is and put me on speaker and play along with whatever I say, no matter what, okay?”

He hesitates, and I furrow my brows at her.

Mav answers, “Pres?” he checks with me.

“Do it,” I tell him. However, I’m as much in the dark as he is right now.
