I roll my shoulders. “You maybe wanna fill me in on the plan?”

She turns, glancing over her shoulder at a couple of men approaching, looking like they’re going to refuel the helo. Then she turns back to me. “Crow and Vulture, they need to be taken out. They can’t come after you, me, or Poppy if they’re not here to run this place. We’ve gotta get rid of them.”

“Consider it done,” I grunt back at her. If these two women are the leaders, then I am more than down to take off their fucking heads where they stand.

“Remember, they’re the assassins who train the assassins. They’re good. Real fucking good, Alpha. They will always be one better than you, two steps in front of you, ready to strike. Youshould probably leave them to me.”

Swallowing heavily, I crane my neck to the side. I’m not letting Haven go in there alone. “I’m coming with you, Haven. No fucking arguing.”

“We better go before they realize you’re not a part of The Nest. C’mon, grab your gear, and let’s head in through the bunker.”

I should have picked up that there was more, much, much more to Haven when I met her. Her attitude and the way she carried herself told me she wasn’t just your everyday sassy woman.

She’s trained, she’s a fighter, she’s made from steel.

Just like me.

It’s why we work.

And it’s why I’m about to face off against skilled assassins to ensure she makes it out of this alive.

I’ve already lost so much in my life.

I’ll be damned if I am about to lose this woman too.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Haven

All things considered, Alpha is taking this relatively well so far. But admittedly, we are running across the airfield, trying to keep hidden. There’s not much room for panicking or being emotionally jeopardized right now.

We slam up against the side of the bunker building, and I pull Alpha next to me, keeping him out of sight, both of us panting from the long run. I turn to look at him and see him assessing me like he doesn’t know what to think. As if he doesn’t know who I am underneath it all.

“Alpha, I—”

“Let’s keep moving. We can talk over everything when this is all done, and we’re back at the clubhouse,” he grumbles, shutting me down.

My shoulders slump, and I break my eyes from his, turning back for the bunker door. I have no clue if they have removed my access codes or not, but we’re about to find out. Moving to the access locker, I scan my hand, and enter the code. It beeps, then flashes green. Smiling, I yank open the door, and shove Alpha inside. Closing the door behind me, we have to make our way through the halls to the upper levels to find Vulture and Crow if they haven’t already been alerted to our presence.

My anxiety is high as we walk the halls.

“What’s the plan, Haven?” Alpha asks.

“When we approach either Vulture or Crow, you hang back and let me take care of them. I don’t need to be worrying about you. I just want to get them taken care of and then to get the fuck out of here.”

He lets out a small laugh. “I think you underestimate myabilities, little lamb. I was trained in the military.”

I smirk, loving his enthusiasm. “Just humor me.Pleasedon’t try anything.”

“Is this you trying to make up for wanting to kill me?” He rolls his shoulders.

I stop walking and turn, facing him. “I neverwantedto kill you. I was ordered. There’s a difference.”

Alpha stares right at me, his fierce gaze not wavering. “Would you have? Would you have completed your mission if the final order came through to take me out?”

I snort a laugh, waving my hand around to take in our surroundings. “Alpha, I’m at the place that practically raised me from a young age, about to tear the whole institution downfor you!No. There’s no way I was going to follow through.” I go to walk off, but he reaches out and grabs my wrist, pulling me back to him.

“Why? Why me?”
