We round the edge of the building, checking to make sure no one is there. Rip is manning the gate, but he’s looking in the other direction, so we make a run for it. Haven takes off first, and I follow behind, making the mad dash across the parking lot for the row of glistening black and chrome bikes.

We skid to a halt at the top of the line, ducking behind Swift’s bike. Haven pulls out the device, my heart racing in my chest as she pulls the pin and slides it into Swift’s saddlebag. She grabs me by my cut, and we take off to duck behind some crates, waiting for the inevitable.

Swift’s bike detonates, the chassis launching into the air, then slams back down on top of my bike, knocking it to the ground. The blast hits my body like a wave as the pressure from the force knocks a couple of other bikes over with the energy it releases.

Clenching my eyes, my body shudders when I’m catapulted right back onto the helo.

My men are clambering to get on, but the insurgents are taking them out as they try their hardest to get to us. One by one, their bodies fall victim to the mess I created. Gates is the only soldier left as I lift the helo away from the Embassy.

“Alpha!” I vaguely hear through the sounds of screaming and gunfire.

“Alpha!” A harsh slap across my face makes the ringing in my ears cease, and I unclench my eyes.

“Stone, look at me!” Haven’s voice is like a fucking angel bringing me back from the brink as my eyes lock with hers. She stares at me, her hands on either side of my face, my breathing slowing. “I got you, babe. But you gotta pull your shit together right now. We need to get Swift. Poppy is inside, and we’ve gotta deal with him. We have to do this now. For Poppy, okay?”

Haven’s words cut through just like she intended, like the sharp cut edge of a knife. I stand, wiping the sweat from my brow. “Fuck. It’s the blast. Hearing it go off like that and having Gates here, it took me back there—”

“No need to explain. I get it, and you can tell me all about it. Just not right now. We have to think about saving this club and making sure Poppy is safe. That’s our mission. Eliminate the threats.”

Anger surges through me as I clench my fists. “Swift thinks he can take overmy clubhouse? He’s gonna learn the hard way that I won’t go down that fucking easy. And you threaten my fucking kid in the process? You’ve sealed your fucking fate, asshole.”

Haven smiles, leans in, and quickly presses her lips to mine, then pulls back. “There he is! Let’s go show Swift what kind of president youreallyare.”

Folding my arms over my chest, Haven stands beside me while Swift races out of the clubhouse, a couple of brothers beside him with fire extinguishers. Swift throws his hands in the air. “What the fuck happened to our bikes? Rip,you motherfucker, weren’t you watching the bikes?”

Rip steps over, his eyes drifting to us as we step up behind Swift, and he chuckles. “Nah, man. I was totally guarding the gate like you told me to. Maybe you should be more careful withthose fireworks you have in your saddlebag and shit, brah?”

Swift shoves Rip. “This was not fucking fireworks, you dumb fucking piece of shit!”

I pull out my gun, aiming at the back of Swift’s head. He stops dead still when I click off the safety. “Don’t call one ofmybrothers dumb or a piece of shit, you cunt. You havenoright to belittle anyone in this club. In fact, youdon’t even belong in this club, do you, youfucking traitor?”

Swift begins to chuckle, raising his hands before he slowly turns around to face us. The rest of our brothers smile when they spot us. “I guess I should have figured something was up. All this was a little too easy. You though, Haven, you were supposed to be the best assassin in The Nest. We paid quite the sum for you. Why the fuck did you have to grow a conscience forthisasshole?”

Haven steps forward, shaking her head. “The thing is, Swift. Iamthe best assassin The Nest had, but that just goes to show how much good Alpha can do. Hechangedme. Showed me there is a life outside of what I had been taught. He showed me family, friends, a brotherhood who also has his back, and he showed meIwas worthy of love—”

“Boooring! I don’t give a shit, Haven. You were paid to do a job. We wanted Alpha dead. You failed, so we’ll have to kill you both now.”

I snort out a laugh. “Are you fucking blind? I am the one with the gun to your head.”

Swift smirks, rolling his shoulders. “Yeah, butIam the president now. And these boys will do what their president tells them to do.”

My eyes shift to Ink, Strings, Loki, and Rip as they move closer.

Haven turns to me like she’s concerned.

Swift chuckles. “Boys, grab them both. We’re taking them tothe farm. Haven can spend her final moments with the pigs because she loves them so much.”

The guys start moving forward. For a brief second, I tense up, but when I see Rip and Loki dip their heads at me, a slow smile crosses my face, and I lower my gun. “You’re right, Swift. The boys will doexactlywhat their president tells them to. Grab this fucking asshole, guys.”

Swift widens his eyes, snapping his head around like he’s confused, as the four of them lunge for him. Loki tears Swift’s club cut from his shoulders before Rip grabs one arm, Strings the other, and Ink tightens Swift in a headlock.

Swift instantly begins to fight back.

I raise my gun, aiming it at him again, and he stops fighting. “You fucking coward! Trying to impress Daddy so you work your way into my club, into my life, just to help bring me down. What’s in it for you, huh? I get why Gates is pissed at me for what happened at the embassy. Yeah, I’m partly to blame, and he lost his men, but you? What the fuck have you got to do with it?”

Swift shakes his head. “You have no fucking clue, do you? What it’s like living with one of you? The way you’re constantly battling the demons in your mind. The way any kind of noise takes you back there, back to the embassy.” I tense all over while a trickle of sweat rolls down my temple. “I see it in your eyes now, fighting the visions trying to invade your mind. For my dad, hecan’tfight them. They’re constant. The only thing that kept him here, that kept him sane, was the thought of payback, the thought of seeking justice for the team that was lost. For making the man who hurt so many hurt so fucking much himself before he died.”

I scrunch up my face in confusion. “How was this all meant to go down, Swift? Was I even going to know he was your father before Haven was supposed to kill me?”
